Rules and Tips for the Adventure Cleanse- Let's Get Fired Up!

Who is ready to go???? I hope that you are! I am. We are gearing up for a nasty ice/rain/snow storm which will derail my ability to get my much anticipated new glorious iphone---but all good things to those who wait huh?

I've been getting my daily questionnaire ready for the Adventure Cleanse. I love it. I'll share it with you..but once again...PUHLEEZE BUY THE BOOK!!!!!

Crazy Sexy Diet: Eat Your Veggies, Ignite Your Spark, and Live Like You Mean It!"The following questions will help keep you on the right road oer the next 21 days. Ideally you want to try to answer these questions at the end of the day when you can sit and think without distraction. Hey, why don't ya photocopy this page to make up your own journal!" ---THAT'S what I did! I printed it on cute pink paper and put it in a binder ;-)

1. Did you abstain from coffee?
2. Did you abstain from alcohol?
3. Did you abstain from gluten?
4. Did you abstain from animal products?
5. Did you abstain from crack (aka sugar) and choose low-glycemic fruits and better alternatives such as stevia or agave?
6. Did you dry brush today?
7.Did you clean your sinuses with the good ol' neti pot?
8. Did you move your body for at least thirty-five minutes?
9. Did you meditate for fifteen to twenty minutes?
10. Did you chew your meals thoroughly and mindfully?
11. Did you laugh out loud and tell someone you loved him or her today?
12. Did you spend time in nature?Even five minutes is better than nothing?
13. Did you get eight hours of uninterrupted sleep?
14.What did you eat today and did you juice? Include breakfast, lunch, dinner, and any in-between snacking- it may help to jot down meals and snacks throughout the day.
15. How much purified water did you consume? You can include fresh veggie juices in your calculation.
16. What supplements did you take?
17. How was your elimination?- Yup...poop!
18. What time did you stop eating?Three hours before bed in optimum.
19. How do you feel physically?
20. How do you feel emotionally?

Do a lot to be inspired this week. Look at new blogs. Read inspirational quotes. Listen to great audio and watch awesome youtube clips. Daily I will provide some quotes, youtube videos, and my personal thoughts along this process. It's crazy how devastating news can send me back into a downward spiral--emotionally, physically, psychologically. I am fortunate to have an arsenal of healthy tools in all areas that I can pull from when times get tough. As a single mom with no "significant other" I am often left taking matters into my own hands. My feminist soul feels great....but it would be awesome to have a closer partner in all that I go through. By partner I don't mean a guy...or a lover...or whatever. I wish my best friend lived closer to me. Or my mom or one of my "solids"...but all in all..I am so much stronger for haven gone through it all...exhale... Okay I'm done.

So this cleanse is coming (although I timed it earlier this year) at a perfect time. I am eager and ready for it.



I will type of Day 1 for tomorrow and doing all at home workouts for the duration of the cleanse. Now that school is in session the driving time for the gym and set up time...find a machine time is a pain in the ass and an extra hour that I can't afford to waste. Besides, I love working out at home. I truly do. I get in such a zone at home. I lost all of my initial weight at home with Kennedy in her crib in the next room or running under my sidekicks as a toddler. Those were the days...well, they are back! Today I did a cardio circuit and weight circuit at home today and took a shower. It was awesome!

I'm off to read for school and get some rest. I hope the snowstorm does NOT come our way tonite!

Tomorrow is Day 1!

Tomorrow is a great day. yes yes yes yes I will have a new iphone tomorrow...ahhhh. My post will no longer be sporadic. ahhhhh...and my photos will be back! Yes yes yes yes. Yes yes yes. (I'm making a point to say the word yes more---shifts my energetic vibration)
Anywho, I've been getting ready for school and working through some other craziness in my life--but what doesn't kill ya blah blah blah rite? :-)

To gear up for the cleanse...I bought spinach, bananas, almond milk, veggies to juice, awesome gluten free whole foods (grains n veggies) to mix and match and have my seasonings ready to go! I feel so excited about it.

Now ...I will post ALL of the tips and advice for Day 1 later tonite. But I won't do this for the entire 21 days! I want you to BUY THE BOOK! Seriously...if you can't afford to (and trust me I feel ya) go to your libary. Most are carrying it! And if not, you can request that they get it. I'll put all the basic premises of the cleanse on the blog tonite.

Silent Cleanse

I can't say what has kept me away just know that I need your prayers. It involves Kennedy and major life decisions. Suffice it to say, my X is a horrible person most of the time....exhale...I was stuck in those negative emotions of fear and anger for days. I overate..broke my 30 day plan for no processed food and didn't go to the gym. Nothing good can come of any of that...this I is a new day.

I woke up this morning and took a hot candlelit bath and wrote my cares away in my journal. I feel a million times better. I just need to smudge myself and my house and start over. So after Kay goes to school ---snow delay so she's going late---and I am going to head to the gym for a magazine and easy cardio. My stomach isn't feeling the best after my poor diet for the past week :(

Sooooooooooo who wants to join me on Kris Carr's Adventure Cleanse????? Come on!!! I hope we can post and use the comments section for questions and tips....Let's rollllllllllllllllllllll! Do you have the book Crazy Sexy Diet yet?????? Seriously, you need to get it! I have read and re read so many sections of it. It is what motivated me to stop whining about my situation right now and just focus on being positive. Sometimes all I have is my integrity and honesty./ I pray it carries me ...

So...the cleanse is 21 days long. I want to start on February 1st. Join me!!!!

I need to do this cleanse for spiritual and physical reasons. I am just going to make sure that I stay clear and focused on what's important and making sure all my "channels" aka chakras are clear....

Kiss Ass Playlist and "Sexy for Summer" Workout

I know I know....summer is hella months away, but I don't care. This life is all about being positive and focused on something positive...sooooooooooo I am dreaming of taking Kay to the beach and seeing myself in one of those 1950s hot as hell, bad to the bone bathing suits with the build in skirt thing! Oh me oh my how hippie dippie, I can see it. Ahhhh I may go to Miami for my bday this year. I am sure the bathing suit will come in handy ;-) Okay, I got an email about my playlist...I don't know where to start. Music is sooooooo vital to my life. Always has been. It was the only method and means for me to communicate with my daughter for about a year and a half when she was nonverbal. We used Dora mainly, but I constantly made up song (and still do) to help teach my daughter new things.
We wake up in the morning and on goes the tunes. Oh yea. We dance as we brush our teeth...we dance as we get dressed...we dance as I make breakfast...and we dance at nite time. We have a blast. It helps that Kennedy is a true budding musician and is so talented at guitar and keyboard...she is a young Black female Justin Beiber! no I didn't just say that! No lessons...pure talent.

Today we were snowed/iced in...yea rite! We still got up on time...actually EARLY...we got the oil changed/topped off transmission and brake fluid and then got lost! yes lost lost lost for 30 minutes! I dropped Kay off at school and made it on time to buy a cute new sweater and some new tights :-)

I also saw No Strings Attached . I laughed. I cried. It was the best ever ever ever. I highly recommend it! I thought I was in the wrong theatre because after the previews they started to play The Dilemma . I ran out of the movie like a psycho and obsessively searched for the manager like Natalie Portman looked for a toilet to barf in on Black Swan LOL
Anywho...After the movie, I went to the gym to squeeze in a workout. Why am I so hungry?? I don't know, but I'm sure the workouts are helping in that department.

Why the hell did the janitor at my gym come up to me during my workout rude dude and ask if I was working out for him? Uhhh excuse me???? He had face on...and I looked him right into his eyes and said, "Uh...NO I'm not...excuse me". He felt embarassed and said, "you could have just pretended". WTF?? How unprofessional! He was being a total sleeze ball and I was NOT impressed.

People email me all the time about being nervous in the gym. Worrying about what they look like in there. I know I look crazy most all the time sometimes, but I just put my music up and go for it. People will say what they want to. For example...when I FIRST started going back a woman I knew said, "wow you've gained some weight." I thought to myself, "No shit bitch...thanks for pointing that out. Without YOU I would NEVER have known that Captain Obvious Asshole". (Clearly I have unresolved issues about it)...but I didn't care. I go for myself. I LOATHE the set up of my gym. Soooooooo stupid and undefined...but I make the best I can out of what I have.

I was tired from only sleeping 4 hours last nite and waking up to pitch black darkness. I will be back before bed, but I have to get ready to go out in the freezing temperatures to grab bottled water for her school dance and dance it up all nite long!

Gym Time

Just getting on here to pump myself up for the gym. After skipping spinning the other nite, I have been in tune with what I want to do in the gym. Last nite I killed it in there. Although I went at "prime time", I found my little patch of space and gave it 100%.

I'll post the exercises when I get home. Just hopping on to say I hope you make today an amazing day. Don't let anything stand in your way. Not yesterday's mistakes (if there were some) or this morning's drama.  Do it for you. Scream and fight for your right to be fit and healthy.

Crazy Sexy Living- Crazy Sexy Diet- Crazy Sexy Kris Carr

Without a doubt there are a few women that have been instrumental in my personal growth and development over the past few years. This women I'll talk about today definitely has. After a late nite heart to heart in NYC, not one day has gone by that I haven't read soemthing she wrote, or watched a clip of her life.

So....Do you want to grab control of your life? Do you really want to feel a divine spark on all fronts? Then the crazy sexy warrior goddess K.Carr is the one to help ignite the fire. I have been a Kris fan and devotee since she FIRST showed up on the scene! (I know how lame that sounds). I would love to say that I initially helped bring her into the raw community by obsessively writing about her and speaking about her at all raw events! Imagine how EXCITED I was to meet her and her handsome husband Brian at an NYC raw party!!! I was floored. My car was towed that nite and it didnt' matter. I stayed behind and shook my ass with her while sipping fresh squeezed OJ and snacking on raw chocolate---ahhh those were the days.

Anywho, the Miss Sassy Chick has done it again! In her new book Crazy Sexy Diet, Kris gives the most amazingly insightful, down-to-earth approach to eating well and being in charge of your own vessel. I participated in the 21 Day Cleanse that she used as research for this book! I felt amazing and had a great time. As a canSer survivor, I can tell you that Kris has changed my life. She changed the way that I saw canSer, illness and the like and helped to validate what I already believed- I am in control of my body. I transferred what I learned over to Kennedy and her life and illnesses as well.

What To Do When You Don't FEEL Like Exercising

I'm sure at this point I sound like a preacher, but we are so lucky to have the bodies that we do. Even if we are unhealthy and overweight. Every day....every moment is another opportunity to turn it all around. DON'T YOU GET THAT?!?!??!?!? You can be, do, and have anything that you want. You just have to know what you want and know what you don't want.

Let's get started. You all know I am obsessed with fitness professionals. One of my favorites Jennifer Nicole Lee

She talks a lot about not asking whether you want to do something or not, just do it. Like dressing the kids and bringing them to school. You can be dog tired, but you HAVE to do it. Treat your fitness and plant based diet like a blessing and not a chore. I am fortunate enough to say that I truly do love working out. I love cooking healthy food and I love to feel good. Looking good is merely a by-product of it all. I will be doing this workout on Thursday of this week!

I was talking to a friend today in the gym about eating disorders. I really believe that there can be a thin line between healthy and disordered eating patterns and disordered exercise patterns. I see people everyday in the gym that do 2+ hours of cardio per day and weights...classes..the sauna. I think...geez...they are so skinny...truly skinny. I am fit and getting leaner (losing my 2010 stress weight gain) but I am strong...I eat carbs and I make dessert. Life is delicious and meant to be enjoyed, not obsessed over.

So, I beg you. If you are one of the people that are desperate for a change. Desperate for a difference in your body and your life---start right now by realizing that the answer is consistency and patience. It took me 8 months to gain those 25 lbs and I told myself that I have 4-5 to take it off. So far I am 13 pounds down and still having dessert and eating out. I will not become a slave to calories or exercise schedules and I don't want that for you. Write it down. Plan it out. Maybe journal your food, but don't obsess. Please.

I'm off to clean up and get gas! Then head to the gym for spinning tonite!

Ayuverdic Self-Care Rituals and My Soy Cafe' Visit

 Today was an awesome day. I stayed up a bit too late last nite and bribed Kennedy to let me sleep in a bit! I love parenting ;-) I dropped her off at her dad's and headed to Philly with a dear friend. We were going to see an independent Black play, but were late :( Instead we journeyed over to Soy Cafe'!! I was starving too. I had a sesame tofu salad with apple ginger dressing and a grilled portabella mushroom sandwich on black rye bread (gluten) with soy cheese and soy mayo and lettuce. I finished it with a vegan homemade cranberry oatmeal cookie sweetened with maple syrup and some organic brown sugar. OH MY GODDESS....soooooooo good.

Everyone loves to be pampered. I do...but honestly I can't afford to go to a spa :( but don't frown for long! You can do your own at home spa nite. You should do one ever so often because YOU are worth it! Take time out for you...just you to pamper yourself and treat the outside of your body as well as you are hopefully treating your insides.

Here are some Yoga Journal tips by Niika Quistgard on "True Beauty" Ayuverdic self-care rituals. I have personally tried them all and I can tell you that I feel magically alive ultra-feminine and amazing when I am done. Trust at least ONE DAY a month into your schedule for the following activities or at least do one per week. Tell me how it goes....


*to cool down- Fill a foot tub with cool water and mix in a tablespoon of honey and  handful each of dried lavender and fresh rose petals. You can also use lavender or rose essential oil. this will soothe the mind.

*to warm up- Fill a foot tub with lukewarm water and add 1 teaspoon of ginger powder. This will invigorate the body and increase circulation- THIS IS MY FAV!

*to relax and rejuvenate- Fill a foot tub with very warm water and add 3 tablespoons per gallon of Epsom salt. This will reduce any swelling and alleviate fatigue.

*first soak- submerge your feet, relax for 10 minutes, then remove your feet and pat dry. Give yourself a foot massage, using sesame, olive, or coconut oil. Apply the oil generously.

*finally, rinse your feet with warm water, dry thoroughly, and slip them into clean cotton socks, which will allow your feet to feel protected, soft, comfortable, and responsive.


*prepare the triphala infusion by boiling 1 teaspoon of triphala powder in 1 cup of water for abotu 10 minutes. Allow the mixture to cool completely; strain thoroughly.

*wash your face with cold water. Then, using a cupped palm, bathe each open eye with cool triphala water 3 times. Rinse the face with a bit of pure water, and pat dry.

*Layer organically grown rise petals, cucumber slices, or cilantro leaves over each closed eye. Place a cotton pad over each eye; then tie a band of muslin cotton on a bandanna around the eyes to create a loose blindfold.

*lie back in Savasana , relax, picture something beautiful, and begin to do 5 cycles of each of these 5 eye exercises with your eyes closed: 1. rotate your eyes clockwise 2. rotate your eyes counterclockwise 3. move eyes eyes in a figure 8

*now relax and breathe for 20 minutes. Release the blindfold. Immediately direct your vision to a beautiful sight, object or photo that makes you feel calm and connected.


*brush your hair thru and wash out any hair-care products. warm 2-3 tablespoons of oil in a metal spoon over a flame or an aromatherapy diffuser. Your scalp is more sensitive to temperature than other areas of the body so test it on your inner arm.

*apply oil to the crown of your head. Massage your scalp using a pinching motion, bringing the fingertips and thumbs together, then releasing. Move hands forward and back, then side to side, covering the entire head. Make small circles on the scalp with your fingertips, maintaining an even, enjoyable pressure as you work from the hairline back to the base of the skull. To finish the massage, rub your open palm in wide circles all over your scalp.

*finger-comb the oil through your hair and leave on for 15 minutes as you relax. Gently shampoo with a mild cleanser, towel dry, then let your hair finish drying naturally. If you feel inspired, add ornaments or fresh flowers to it.


*Prepare the nourishing mask by mixing 2 tablespoons plain coconut yogurt with 1/3 teaspoon honey and a pinch of tumeric powder and set aside.

*At the bathroom sink, splash water onto your face. Then mix a little warm water with 2 teaspoons ground flaxseed to form a light paste. Apply a thin layer to your skin and massage in circles all over your face, spending some extra time gently scrubbing any oily or rough areas. Rinse well with cool or warm water. Never hot. hot water stresses delicate facial skin and strips away oils...pat dry--I almost ALWAYS use hot water--an older Black lady who marched with MLK told me to use that!

*spread the yogurt-tumeric mixture evenly over your entire face. Lie down and relax for 10 minutes, taking deep breaths and making a conscious effort to release any tension you may be holding in your jaw or forehead.

*Rinse with cool water and pat dry. Follow with a rosewater spritz. Finish by patting your damp face with clean hands to "seal" the good effects of your facial into your skin. Natural glow is all the makeup you will need.

So, please take some time out for yourself. Try just ONE of the above remedies. Feel good about using most items right out of your kitchen!

Pass The Tofu? Tofu Myth Debunked

Okay. I'll agree, the title reads like a headline for the newspaper, but I just had to write about it. In the world of healthy eaters there are the vegans, the no gluten peeps, the hell-no tofu-ers, and many more. As I always say on this blog, let your body guide YOU. I can't possibly tell you what is best for your body. I can continue to use my body and life as an experiment and report back. With that said, I made a mission in 2011 to get buff...yes buff...lean and mean and fierce. I also aimed to start off slowly. Because I took most of 2010 "off" from exercise while caring for and recovering Kennedy from brain surgery....getting back on the wheel meant slow and steady CONSISTENT movement.

I've always loved little iron pills...and I want nothing more than for you to bite the iron pill bullet. Go to Target and get some snazzy 8 and 10 lbsers or maybe 5s and 8s to start and let's get to work sculpting the best body ever!---okay Advertisement over ;-)
Anywho, when I had my leanest body ever just two short years ago tofu was a main staple in my diet. I can admit I was eating tofurky jerky (yum), and tofurky slices and lots of soy yogurt. I gave a big X to the soy yogurt, but have found my sites set on tofu. Now...Kennedy is mainly soy free, but I throw tofu in the mix every now and again...ya know...spice it up. I know to some "tofu" is hardly spicing it up, but in this ultra-vegan hippie household--IT IS!
I am a researcher and love to find things out for myself. So I set out on a mission to debunk this "tofu myth". I went to online Harvard (aka Google) and set out on a mission to get the scoop straight from the edamame's mouth: Is tofu good for you or is it bad for you?

To my pleasant (and confused) surprise...tofu rocks! Oh yea oh yea. And even if it fucks over most just LOVES me and my abs and my biceps...and my quads (I digress) ;-)

You may not know this, but soy foods are controversial. Some people think tofu is abominable because of the way it tastes, but if you look around on the internet, there are sources that think it is evil and "life-endangering". I had to investigate since I love tofu and don't want to endanger my life. After all, I gave up Cheetos and processed foods (which I love much more than tofu) because they're unhealthy. There's no way I'm going to endanger my life over tofu.
Traditionally, foods made from soybeans - tofu, soy milk, miso, tempeh, etc. - have been considered low-fat, protein-rich health foods. However, if you search the web, you will find several articles that say soy is an unhealthy (if not downright evil) food. What's up with that? Let's look at the evidence on both sides. First, the facts:
Soy foods are considered good protein and calcium sources, so a lot of vegetarians and lactose-intolerant people turn to them for those nutrients. For a 3.5 oz serving (same size as a serving of meat), the organic tofu in my fridge provides 5 gm fat (7.5% DV or daily recommended value on a 2000 calorie diet), 10 gm protein (18.75% DV), 2.5 gm total carbohydrates (1.25% DV), 7.5% DV of calcium, 7.5% of DV iron, and 100 calories.
Why people are proponents of soy as a health
Non-meat protein and calcium source

Lowers LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol), 2007 study from National Institute of Health and Nutrition, Tokyo, Japan

Isoflavones (compound in soy), reduces the risk of initial and recurring breast cancer, Wall Street Journal

Why people think soy is unhealthy:
It impairs thyroid function (unlike the others, there is some basis for this one - soy may impact you if you have a thyroid dysfunction - so avoid)

Unfermented soy prevents protein and nutritional absorption due to phytic acid and trypsin inhibitors

It causes mental degradation due to aluminum absorbed in soy

Phytoestrogens add hormones (plant version of the female hormone estrogen)

Weston A. Price and Dr. Mercola are main proponents of the soy is evil thinking. The studies above and Dr. Weil make these people seem wacko.
What to believe? I looked deep inside myself (not usually a source of answers), but I found some in my genetics. I am Taiwanese, and my people have been eating tofu, soy milk, and miso for centuries.
The anti-soy articles (like this one by Nourished Magazine which is particularly nuts) just don't seem to have a grasp on reality. They often state:
Asians eat very little soy products (7 grams a day), and if so, it is always fermented. Have any of these people lived in an Asian home? Do they know any Asians? I happen to know a lot of Asians that I'm related to, but I know even more that that of all types. Soy products are pounded on a regular basis. Bowls of hot soy milk are served for breakfast in Taiwan. Koreans have stews that are tofu stews. No one I know has a tiny 7 grams a sitting. This is bogus.

Phytoestrogens will lower sperm count and feminize boys. And 100 gms of soy protein have the equivalent of one contraceptive pill. Last time I checked, Asia was being accused of overpopulation - China even enacted a one child rule. There doesn't seem to be any low sperm count there. I don't think a feminized male could have kids. And I dare you to use soy protein as a contraceptive (not really, that would just be stupid). If soy was superfeminizing, you would think that the average Asian women would have the figure of Pamela Anderson Lee (post-surgery). Riiiight. There are more real hormones fed to industrial cattle than the tiny amount of plant hormones in soy.

Soy causes Alzheimers and dementia, and causes you to die earlier. After centuries of eating lots of soy, there is no evidence of any of those things in Asia, and the population with the highest longevity is the Japanese.

So, after filtering the evidence through common sense and empirical evidence, MindfulEats will confidently say soy (fermented or not) is good for you as long as you're not allergic to it or have a thyroid disorder.
What to do - Eat Soy in Moderation

Some people should avoid soy. If you have a soy allergy, a thyroid disorder, iodine deficiency (very rare) or hate the taste, then avoid it. If your body doesn't react well to it, avoid it. In terms of taste, I love tofu and can't abide the taste of soy milk. My brother likes soy milk but can't stand tofu.

Buy only organic and non-genetically modified (GMO) soy products. Actually, a food that is certified organic is not supposed to be GMO so you're getting both. Soy is a large industrial crop that is heavily treated, which is why you want organic.

Soy products (except for edamame) are processed foods. So you may want to go light on them. The anti-soy contingent is generally ok with fermented soy foods like tempeh and miso, but they're wacky.

Use soy as a protein source, but like everything else, make sure you not eating it to the exclusion of other foods. Eat a WIDE variety of whole foods to get a full range of nutrition.

I believe in you. I believe in me. I believe that 2011 can be the best best best possible year yet. You can cross that thin silver line that lies between who you are and who you know your truest self to be. It all begins and ends with what you put into your mouth. Yes it does! Do I eat cake? Hell yea? Do I eat coolies? Absolutely. I'm eating two right now. But I am now in a much better spiritual place where I am careful about what I put into my God Pod because I deserve to be healthy. My body is NOT  garbage site! I shouldn't just drop shit in there that has a shelf life longer than Gulf War. (Trust me this took me years and years and years to grasp), but through journaling, painting, dancing, writing and crying I realized that it all fundamentally boiled down to what I thought I was worth. GASP.!!!!! Who wants to admit that? Well, I didn't, but the second that I did...I started making oatmeal raising cookies from scratch (add agave SANS sugar) and strawberry shortcake with FRESH strawberries and I literally had my cake and ate it too.

I want this for you. I want that deeply rooted, glorious sense of purpose and self-worth that sees junk food as exactly what it called = junk aka shit aka fat-inducing-artery-clogging-shit that will stick to your ass and in your colon for long after you finish chewing. You are worth it. You are worth so much more than any momentary satisfaction you think is being provided by that 15 minute "binge" with crappy food. Plan for your treats. Make them or get them from the best sources. Spend a little cash and order a box of vegan or raw vegan treats and gobble away! Because you're worth it! No I didn't steal that from the Revlon commercial!

Lessons Learned

First of all... I wouldn't know where to really begin. I feel so fortunate to have this link into what life is really all about. Before, I thought that I knew, but I didn't. I thought I knew what it was to be mindful...aware...tranquil. Now I realize that I did not. Kennedy's grace and strength...her will to live had given me new eyes from which to see. She is truly the reason that I exist and I am devoted and committed to doing ANY AND EVERYTHING to make her life and time here as memorable, fantastic as possible.

My diet... wow right? I have finally settled on what seems to truly work for moi. Veganism runs in my veins. I am do committed to living to my life following the principles of ahisma that I could not eat meat or any animal products if I tried. I honestly have no judgment about those who do.I use to be a card carrying vegan activist, shouting in the face of someone's big mac--yelling obscenities from street corners on microphones (I am serious--I did). Now I am more Ghandi with it, "My life is my message". And it is. I get so many people who think I"m barely 20 years old!! At Kennedy's school, I get the "Who are you here to pick up?" looks. I love it.

How my diet affects my life...

In my honest opinion it doesn't matter what you eat. The question is truly "How do I feel?" If you are running around with abundant energy, balanced emotions, great bowel movements...then who the hell am I to rain on your parade. Even if your diet consist of a plethora of trans fats, and process laden donut ho-hos? However, if you are like majority of people, your diet is killing you slowly...making you fat, aging your face, and giving you a host of bowel issues. Don't you want better? Everyone wants to sell you some "plan"...some "genius, one-pill-a-day" plan that will put your eating and diet back on track. NO NO NO NO NO! Not gonna happen. Truth is...most of us know what to eat. We know what to do. We need someone to be accountable to and someone to help guide us along the way. Hopefully that's where I come in!!!I am using allllllll of my "expertise"--hahaha--- and knowledge to put together my own little buziness. More in the weeks to come though---shhhh

So, to wrap up the diet end of things... you are what you eat. You are worth the extra time it takes to sautee' veggies, rather than grab n go a sugary yogurt. And no one better than me understands time and financial constraints. I am the single mother of a severely ill child, living 1300 miles away from my support network. I have made tips and tricks that I know have saved my life and my diet. I only use the gauge of how well I am feeling. The weight that I picked up is melting off and I am feeling better than I have in a long time. I've lost 70lbs on my own, as a working mom/full-time student mom....stressed mom. I've gone through a stint in the NICU, severe classical Autism, progression up the spectrum, Chiari Malformation Type !, a subocciptal craniectomy & cervical lamenictomy, 2 bouts of meningitis...Okay let me stop there! My point is that I know I have a unique, realistic approach to weight loss and life long fitness. I am finally pooling it all together to make it accessible to everyone.

I have learned the lesson that life is short. Cherish those you care for.......... okay PSA over ;-)

Today I woke late and missed spinning (twice)..I still went to the gym. Did my cardio and grabbed Kay out of the childcare. Came home and whipped up awesome lunch! I am working on a new way to get pix to the site so I'll post the pic and recipe later (bear with me)...

I also made a green smoothie with some kale that was slowly wilting in my fridge. It gave me crazy energy!

Cardio With No Knee? Is this Possible...

I awoke to NO internet...yea the life of an unemployed single mother ;-) It was on before day's end but geezzzzzzzzzz...... hence the late blog.

Tomorrow is Kennedy's first spelling test so I took her to a playplace to get some of her steam off and help her settle her brain. She did that while I tried to fix my laptop's modem (still trying).Go to fullsize image

Today was one of those all around amazing days...I woke up with the wintry sun in my face. It was glorious. From the moment my feet hit the floor, I made my mind up to have a great day---and I did. One synchronicity after another.

I thought that I would reschedule my gym time for after lunch, but decided to be smart and get it over with. It was my much loved cardio and light abs day...ahhh easy breezy. I decided to ONLY do the elliptical today. Well lo and behold! hurt like hell. I did 50 minutes because I just had to finish my magazine because I am so focused on my health and this weight loss.

After the elliptical, I did some abs and called it quits. I was eager to get home and clean up before Kennedy came home from school.

Today I ate...

Tomorrow is Friday!! I am making solid and sane plans for the weekend for Kennedy and I. Tomorrow we are going to the big Farm Show here. I have no idea what that means. People keep getting offended when I ask if animals are hurt at the show. Why is this? I told Kennedy if one animal is hurt, we will have to leave. She agreed...I'll report back tomorrow...

I am going to try to spin in the morning and lift afterwards...if I wake up thinking it isn't such a good idea...I'll just do the elliptical and lift!

Reader Questions and My Knee Exploded

Today was a bust at the gym! I worked out this morning a little and then left to go to my friend's house. FYI...I HATE breaking up my workout---I got in the stairs (knee fine)...lifted short shortly (knee fine)...went to her house...(knee fine)...back at the gym...started jogging (knee NOT fine)...5 minutes...10 minutes...15 minutes...20 minutes...UNBEARABLE!. I had a talk with myself, "is this happening to me? Is my knee hurting so badly I can barely walk? My running days are over". I hung my head in shame and crept off the machine with the finesse of an elderly woman. I decided that I wouldn't give up. I'd take my bruised and battered knee fractures to the elliptical. "Low impact. Surely this will be fine on my knee" THEN the power of my positive mind started working! "This machine rocks. There is so much that I CAN do. Fuck running. I don't like it anyway (lying to myself)."

When I think of all the limitations placed upon my daughter, I remember that every step I take I should be grateful for...I left limping an vowing to never run again in the next 30-45 days...OUCH.

I have been so hungry lately...geez....I NEED my phone back. I promise to try to get better with pictures, but right now, I am having trouble locating the camera and downloading etc. I will get smoother within this week. I am doing all kinds of stuff to the blog this week!

A lovely loyal reader sent me questions that I thought others might want the answers here goes...

#…# 1. When you make your smoothies I see it is with almond milk…So you make the almond milk yourself or do you purchase it from the store? If you purchase it from the store which brand are you using?

I just posted this this morning :) I use Almond Breeze and Almond Dream. I used to love making it from scratch, but honestly I can't afford it. I can do pumpkin seed milk or brazil nut milk sometimes, but truly I stick with Silk Almond.
# 2.  I see you have Brenda Breville as your juicer…Is that a pretty good juicer?..I want to purchase one but not sure where to go.

Yes that's my favorite juicer. I've had two Jack LaLanne juicers, I have my greenstar (never use it), a Hamilton Beach from Wal Mart (bad move waste of my cash). Brenda is without a doubt my number 1 choice everyday. I am not in a position to buy blender after blender and sorely regret all the wasted money..YIKES. Get a rocks!

# 3. When you do your juice feast how long do you stay on it and what juice/smoothies recipes do you use?..I want to do it.. the last question do you use ALL organic produce?...

I have never done a 92 day juice feast and I have no intention on doing so. I personally feel like it seems like a purity contest sometimes. I'm okay not being that pure :) I have done  a 21 day green smoothie thingie where I had green smoothies until dinner. I wanna do that again soon (wanna join me?). The smoothies were loaded with nutrients and fiber and calories. On juice, I always feel starving. I am NOT a fan of starving. Oh no way Jose'. I am very active and my regular day to day life (without the gym) and I can't sit around detoxing all day! Wow I sound really down on juicing! I don't mean to. I think it rocks. I just like to eat and don't like to be hungry. Organic produce? uhhhh no. I wish I could. I wish I could...but I can't afford it. Apples...always organic. Celery and peppers always organic. Bananas--rarely organic. I do what I can, but truly don't have the financial means to afford it. I do wash the commercial produce in veggie wash from my local health store.

Tomorrow morning I will give you the playlist that helped me to power through my knee pain workout. It ROCKS!

I awoke to a 2 hour snow delay. That means time for me and Kennedy to dance in the mirror in our undies while drinking (smoothie for me, juice for her).

1 c chocolate almond milk -and all who ask, I use  or    If I could afford $40 of almonds, I'd make it myself, but.....I don't and I like how easy it is to grab the bottle and measure a cup or two! shhhhhhhhhhhhh
2 handfuls of spinach
1 tbsp spirulina
2 tbsps hempseeds
2 bananas
blend to perfection. I am buzzing and ready to goooooooooooooooo!!!!!

Off to drop Kennedy at school and go by a friend's house for Reiki...then head to the gym. My knee was killing me last nite. I guess my date with running yesterday took a bad turn. Today I will be on the elliptical for my cardio portion.

What's So Wrong With Cooked Food? Channa Masala and Pan Fried Tofu Recipe

Here me out... My body has been my experiment for the past 6 years of my life in raw foods and the past 9+ as a vegan (go me!) Digress: It still baffles me that I became a vegan sometimes. I never knew ONE VEGETARIAN. My community in New Orleans was pro meat, pro fried, pro lazy as shit. I was always meant to be a vegan. This I know. As a small child, I would push the meat off my plate until my mom stopped giving it to me. I would eat the boiled carrots/broccoli/spinach drowned in cow juice butter and Morton's salt. I would pick the rice out from under the steak and eat it with the sugary filled green peas  before downing my sugary processed dessert with frozen cow juice ice cream. I'd wake up and start again.

During my six year experiment, I have been 100% processed vegan, 100% raw, 100% fruitarian, 100% fasting on juice, 100% cooked, and what I am now....a beautiful, melodic mixture of cooked and raw (no percentages sorry :(  ) and taking amazing supplements. I have found...drumroll puhleeze...eating from PLANTS makes the world of difference! ha! I am not sure if it is the absence of processed food that starts to make the world of difference. Yes raw foods are powerful. I would NEVER say they aren't! I just know the power is in the plant!!! Growing from the ground! Optimally, living in the Ecuadorian rainforest eating mangos would be my best life ever, but reality check...I'm living on a frozen block of ice on the East Coast! I know that eating cooked simple vegan does my tummy better than overly processed (80 ingredient) raw "treats"...not that they aren't aweeeeeeeeeessssssssssooooooooommmmmmmmeeeeeeeeee when I take money from Kennedy's college fund to pay for them!

I love cooked food---gasp----I do. It is intoxicating, aromatic, delicious and especially tasty. I agree with most healthy vegans that there are many-a-trap awaiting us. I am past the unchicken nuggets, fake bbq strips, boca burger stage. But it was important in my evolution. I wouldn't take those unchicken days back! It eased my transition into the plant based world. Back to the point...when I think of my favorite cooked foods: Thai, Indian, Mediterranean, Moroccan, etc...I would be so sad to never eat them again!

Speaking of which...tonite I was really in the mood for channa masala. yummmmmmm. As it was simmering, Kennedy came in and said "it smells like an Indian Wonderland in here mom!" :-) Music to my ears! I will post the pix tomorow. I am stil have technical difficulty :(

Adapted from a Madhur Jaffrey recipe, which was adapted over here because much to my frustration, I own two Madhur Jaffrey books and this is in neither

This is an intensely spiced bright orange chana masala with a sourish bite that reminded of us the best restaurant versions we’ve tasted. I’m thrilled to finally have a good recipe for it at home.

The major changes I made were simplifying the addition of spices, adding more tomatoes and oh, the recipe calls for a tablespoon of amchoor powder, which I did not have. I looked it up and learned that it was dried unripe mango powder (which sounds so delicious to me, I’m buying it next time I go to Kalustyan’s, who also sells it online), which is clearly a sour flavor, so I upped the lemon juice i used instead. The dish had a nice sour snap at the end, so I will presume this is a good swap.

1tablespoon vegetable oil

2 medium onions, minced

1 clove garlic, minced

2 teaspoons grated fresh ginger

1 fresh, hot green chili pepper, minced

1 tablespoon ground coriander

2 teaspoons ground cumin

1/2 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper (I used a quarter of this because my cayenne is extremely hot)

1 teaspoon ground turmeric

2 teaspoons cumin seeds, toasted and ground

1 tablespoon amchoor powder (see note)

2 teaspoons paprika

1 teaspoon garam masala

2 cups tomatoes, chopped small or 1 15-ounce can of whole tomatoes with their juices, chopped small

2/3 cup water

4 cups cooked chickpeas or 2 (15-ounce) cans chickpeas, drained and rinsed

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 lemon (juiced) (see note; I used a whole lemon to swap for the amchoor powder)

Heat oil in a large skillet. Add onion, garlic, ginger and pepper and sauté over medium heat until browned, about 5 minutes. Turn heat down to medium-low and add the coriander, cumin, cayenne, turmeric, cumin seeds, amchoor (if using it), paprika and garam masala. Cook onion mixture with spiced for a minute or two, then add the tomatoes and any accumulated juices, scraping up any bits that have stuck to the pan. Add the water and chickpeas. Simmer uncovered for 10 minutes, then stir in salt and lemon juice.

Eat up or put a lid on it and reheat it when needed. Curries such as this reheat very well, later or or in the days that follow, should it last that long

I ate it wit pan-fried tofu....

*Take 16 oz extra firm tofu
*Wrapped in a paper towel then a real towel and put a large book on top to soak up the moisture.
*Cut into cubes and dipped into my curry/garam masala/cumin mixture and coated with garbanzo bean flour.
*Pan fried in 2 tbsps of olive oil and mixed into the channa masala

Today I had a smoothie with hempseeds, almond milk, 2 bananas, spinach and ice.

My relationship with yoga is so interesting. I told a new friend** that yoga is like an ex-boyfriend who let me walk all over him. I can always go back, flirt with him...have a tryst. He is so amazing. Never expects anything in return. Always shows up being exactly who he is---which ironically changes allllll the time for me. There is all this room to grow, transform, and be reborn. I love him forever and ever.

Diet and Yoga? How do they intercet? Aside from the fact that if you eat and then attempt to do a seated twist, you will projectile barf on the pretzel chick to your right, your body needs to be primed for yoga. Yoga Mala p. 94 Diet is a very important part of this yoga practice.
However, there is a lot of confusion around what are the right foods to eat, and what are the foods that will nourish a practitioner’s body and soul.

Yoga Diet and the 3 Gunas

We must understand the three gunas (the prime qualities of nature) in order to understand Yoga Diet:

•Sattva – the quality of harmony, the balancing force. It encompasses qualities such as: light, love, peace, purity, wisdom, stillness, and spiritual evolution.
•Rajas – the active quality, the simulating or positive force that initiates change, and disturbs the equilibrium. It encompasses qualities such as: passion, agitation, speed, movement, emotional fluctuations of fear and desire, love and hate, attraction and repulsion.
•Tamas – the passive quality, the obstructing or negative force that resists change. It encompasses qualities such as: sustainability, darkness, non-feeling, attachment, depression, lethargy, dullness, heaviness, stagnation and the lower material forces that drag us into ignorance.
At the center of sattva is the attitude of ahiṁsā (non-harming). Foods that are sattvic in nature are the best carriers of prana (vital life-energy).
For a practitioner following the principles of Yoga, taking a close look at “the larger planetary implications of what we eat, including its effects on ecology, conserving natural resources, its effects on world hunger and world peace, as well as the ethical and moral issues regarding cruelty to animals” must be taken into consideration when choosing our diet and what foods we eat.

“A nondairy vegetarian diet consumes from one-tenth to one-twentieth of the energy and natural resources of a flesh-food diet and therefore can potentially create an abundance for the needy millions of God’s children.” (Cousens, Gabriel, M.D. Conscious Eating. 2nd ed. A Sattvic Diet

A Sattvic diet is:

1. Vegetarian - this means avoiding any and all products that include either the harming or killing animals.
2. Emphasizes: Neutral, Natural, Organic, Simple, Clean, Fresh Foods – this means any food that is grown in harmony with nature, in good soils, ripened naturally, and eaten either raw, or cooked with an attitude of devotion.
3. Moderate Eating – even over-eating sattvic foods produces a tamasic effect on the body and mind.

Yogis are very strict about their diet.
Things that are most commonly avoided are:

1. Commercially prepared food, and Processed food.
2. Fried foods and Fast foods
3. Eggs, Onions, Garlic
4. Stale or Left-Over Food
5. Animal flesh
6. Drugs and alcohol
Traditionally the yogic diet was called a diet of “fruits and roots” (phala mula). The bulk of a yogi’s diet would include: whole grains, beans, root vegetables, seeds and nuts, fruits and leafy vegetables, and some dairy products (primarily ghee & milk) as well.
When a yogi takes food, he or she realizes that it is not only nourishing the body but that the qualities inherent in the food will have an effect his or her mind as well.
Yoga practitioners should aim to eat food that will increase their sattvic qualities and that will increase their prana (life sustaining energy). Making true the age-old saying: “you are what you eat!”
Raw food is our most direct source of prana, and by eating raw foods the practitioner directly increases her prana, not only in her body, but also in her mind.
Raw food has been used extensively in the yogic diet to cleanse the nadis (nerve channels) and to increase prana. The importance of raw food for the purpose of purification should not be underestimated.
It is recommended that 50% – 80% of a person’s diet be made up of raw food for optimum health, physically and spiritually.

What about the protein?

“Current research indicates that not only do we get more then sufficient protein on a vegetarian diet, but a vegetarian diet is generally healthier, increases longevity, and increases physical endurance.

It is even a prime preventer of osteoporosis to the extent that vegetarian women have less osteoporosis then meat-eating men.” (Cousens, Gabriel, M.D. Conscious Eating. 2nd ed. North Atlantic Books. 2000. p.305)

These are just a few notes on what constitutes a “yogic diet.” It is important not to get overwhelmed when first beginning to make dietary changes.
Starting to integrate small changes one by one is a good first step towards the goal. Moderation should be observed in every instance along the way. Every change should come from a natural inclination and not from a place of guilt or feelings of obligation.

I came to yoga being an inner-city teen desperate for something different. I have always had this longing inside of me for something deeply spiritual. Frustrations and The GAME

Today the much anticipated premiere of my favorite show The Game at 10/ET on BET. I hope blind stray kittens don't need shelter from the snow during this show because I may be forced to leave them outside. I won't be able to move my eyes from the screen. honestly. Aside from the fact that I am madly, madly, madly, madly in love with  Pooch Hall ..yes that is the ring he got me for the holiday...shhhhh (lol)...the show is soooooooooo real--down to earth--honest and simply amazing. I was devestated when the WB/CW cancelled. Like with most Black a community we kinda expect it to happen (Hello GIRLFRIENDS!), but not this time. We fought to have this show back on the air. I wrote letters. I sent emails. And so did MILLIONS of others. So, tonite makes history. I am so excited to see  Hosea Chanchez and  Coby Bell.

Okay Okay let the iphone go.....exhale....I am trying. But I feel so violated. I am waiting on super important news in the mail that I hope lifts my spirits~

Today went like this....woke up. Instead of having water with lemon, I went straight for the green smoothie...bad move. Then I got Kay up and ready and made her awesome healthy lunch. After I dropped her off I went to CVS to buy a new lock because some bitch person stole my keys at the gym yesterday....exhale....The new lock was a piece of shit  didn't work so I had to return it and buy an old fashioned combination lock (aka the way to go). Then after getting to the gym for the second time, I decided to go home. I was so angry. So full of disgust. The gym is where I needed to be, but I went home and crawled into bed. After the "why me?" story ran round my head a few times, I said "hell with this!". I jumped up...made protein oats and repacked my gym lock and all.

Protein oats= GF +1 c almond milk + 1 scoop vanilla sunwarrior protein powder. With one banana

I let it settle for about an hour and a half and went back to the gym. I still had lingering feelings of being pissed. Besides...what's so wrong about admitting it? We all get pissed off. For those that NEVER do...kudos your way. I get totally, down right, mad as shit sometimes. I don't put the societal pressures to be "ladylike" or "feminine" and silently suffer...I workout my frustrations. But back to the point.  At the gym, I went in a dark corner (ok I'm exaggerating) and got on the treadmill. Ever since my half-marathon knee injury running and I are NOT friends. But I needed to run. I put the towel over the buttons, cranked up "Good Morning" by Diddy and got to running...45 minutes later I had solved everything except world hunger...well that too (if only we'd all go veg and use grain to feed the world....) wait, I digress...

Treadmill + abs + good stretching= a happy, healthy, me. It's not even about calorie burn or any of that crap, it's all about feeling good. I have an obligation to feel good. Like breeds like. So if I want more "feel good" moments...I need to feel good more often. So, now I have an hour before leaving to get Kennedy and I am going to take a super hot shower and sing my heart out to Katy Perry's Firework --This is my favorite song right now. I listen to it like 25 times a day! "Cuz baby you're a firework...come'on show em what you're worth...."

Monday Renewal- Gym Time- Stood Up-Refresh

Okay...I have mourned the loss of my iphone and am taking a second before getting another one. I can't afford it right now, but in a few weeks I'll be back in business. My pix won't be as awesome for now, but don't worry I will get it together.

I skipped the gym yesterday in lieu of a nap! It was amazing. I put my head under the cover and drifted off for about 2 hours before my new ugly non iphone phone woke me up. I then headed out to enjoy the wintry sunshine before Kennedy was due home. By enjoy I meant walk to my car :-)

Last nite I took what I will be calling in 2011 my "Sunday Soaks"....ahhhhhhhhh

I put my bath pillow in the tub, ran hot water, added about 500 10 drops of lavender, light two amazing candles, grabbed my journal, closed the door and melted away. Oh I also added about 1 c of epsom salts (didn't feel like walking downstairs for the baking soda)....I soaked for 30 mins before washing and toweling off and lathering my body in coconut oil and warm jammies....Of course, I was exhausted. Folded laundry and left it on the floor and went to bed early....exhale.

I awoke refreshed and renewed to start my week. Today I did make it to the gym. I had a huge (1quart+) green smoothie with 2 bananas, almond milk, 2 tbsps hempseeds, spinach and love...yum!

I did spinning and then hopped on the elliptical light and easy with a friend and the teh crosstrainer with another friend...did some abs...and waited for a trainer that had begged to train me and he STOOD ME UP. I waited around doing that mind numbing cardio for nothing!! When he did show he found hate mail on his desk from me. It said, "Ian, you suck!" :-)

It's all good. I am on my way out the door for some Reiki and I'll be back tonite with the vegan awesome recipes I'm making!!!!!!!!!!!!

Breakfast:  Massive green smoothie mentioned above
Snack: 1 banana in between training
Lunch: quinoa and eggplant and mushrooms a friend fried up for me (salty and oily....yum)
Snack: green juice
Dinner: zucchinni with cheezy nacho sauce and a small salad

Someone Stole my iPhone :(

I am not my usual jocular self today. I have only slept 2 hours in the past 36 hours. Someone stole my phone from out of my cart at the grocery store last nite. I am devastated. Please don't be the 1000th person to tell me that I should have backed it up more often...or an all too called for "duh" will ensue...

I was in the organic aisle when I tried to decide between spiral or straight GF pretzels. They musta strolled on by and grabbed it. I realized it about 2 minutes later as I got purple onions for a recipe that I thought I was making today but as it turns out, I am too sad to do. I hit the bluetooth in my ear and decided that it had to be within 30 yards because it dialed. So I took off running. Then a guy in the store dialed it for me. Alas I heard it rang out! But my joy was short lived because they immediately put it on silent and then powered the fone off.

I called the police and did an official police report. I have to call him back tonite with the serial number. I know it is probably futile. I stayed in the store for about 2 more hours checking every square inch of that side of the store. Nothing. I begged everyone in the store and all the employees. I told them that I would give them a $150 reward.

On the worst part...all of Kennedy's surgery photos are in there....her hospital stay videos...private moments between her and I...everything. My email access to EVERY account...I am so devastated. I feel so violated. So abused. I am disgusted at the thought that we live in a society where someone would pass by my cart only to see me busy and take an opportunity to snatch something that isn't theirs. My purse was in there...they didnt' take it...too obvious I suppose.

I will be back to regular blogging tomorrow. For today, I am going to cry and do a "Sunday Soak"---- more on it tomorrow though.
