Day 31: New Year's Eve!

It's the last day of 2012 and I have been reflecting on oh so much. This 31 day little challenge was so amazing I have put back into place so many things I'd lost sight of. :)

I only had 5 hours of sleep and got it this morning to take down the Christmas tree...clean all of that up...shovel snow for 1.5 hours and take down my inflatable Christmas decorations.

The snow shoveling burned a ton of calories, but I came back inside and did 35 minutes of strength circuits and plyos. I was a sweaty beast when I was done #beastmode.

Exercise today:
  • shoulder press
  • tricep extension
  • hammer curls
  • bicep curls
  • lat pulls
  • jump rope
  • jumping jacks
  • star jumps
Food today:
  • Green Smoothie: spinach, bananas, almond milk, chia seeds, grapes
  • Huge honeycrisp apple
  • That's it so far...party food tonite
Here are some reposts from awesome people to get your mind ready for the New Year...

10 Lame Ideas, Notions, Concepts, Beliefs & Standards To Let Go of On Your Way To Fulfillment

1. Let go of the belief that you’re not worthy of your desires. You are worthy of your desires

2. Let go of the fear-based notion that you have to say yes to everything in order to be liked, loved, profitable, charitable, kind. Fewer yeses can actually help you be more generous with your giving.

3. Let go of promises that you’ve outgrown. If a commitment is keeping you smaller or duller or safer than the person you’ve become, then it’s not serving anyone.

4. Let go of the insidiously subconscious standard that how you were treated in the past is how you should be treated now. Your family, your old boy/girl/friend, or your last boss may not be the best metric by which to measure how you want to be treated. You’ve grown — your standards for love should grow with you.

5. Let go of the incredibly sexy-dullifying belief that you’ll never get what you want the most. (See #1: You are worthy of your desires.)

6. Let go of the material shit that you just don’t like. In fact, if you don’t LOVE it, make a plan to get rid of it. Too tight, too shabby, brings up bad memories. As me n’ my girls habitually remind each other: “Fuckin-get-ridda-it.”

7. Let go of the concept that art is a luxury. It’s a necessity. A home without human-created art is like a face without eyes.

8. For the love of life, let go of the idea that there’s not enough time. You are the source of time in your life.

9. Let go of the crippling notion that your needs are merely wants. If you really really really deeply truly want to be seen, heard, met, or respected — well then, that’s probably a veritable need that you must have fulfilled to be … fulfilled. (And you should set out to have that need met on a daily basis.)

10. Let go of the “what sucks” story in your life. There’s lots to bitch about — and you should bitch — bitching can be incredibly life-affirming, clarifying and galvanizing. But then stop bitching.

Create a story of your future and tell it over and over again. A future that you’re looking forward to — a future of fulfilled desires, enoughness, plenty of time, and works of art everywhere.

Days 26, 27 and 28: 31 Days til 2013

The soreness has finally left my hamstrings. I didn't stop my workouts all this week though. I have been on a roll and feeling GOOOODDDD. This morning I only had about 37 minutes so I hit the ground running.

Fridays Back and Butt Workout:

Warmup: Jumprope as usual about 4 minutes
Circuits of Good Mornings, Deadlifts, Reverse lunges, Donkey kicks, Superwoman's, Bent over Row and jump rope between most sets. I was a sweaty mess and I loved it. Oh yea I did some burpees in there too. Yep. Sure did.

Post Workout Smoothie:
  • last of my spinach :(
  • almond milk
  • almond butter
  • 2 bananas
  • hempseeds
  • chia seeds
  • frozen pineapple
  • blend and devour
Lunch was boringish....: Bowl of quinoa, black beans, and steamed broccoli. wow....contain your enthusiasm

I've been keeping things ultra simple. Exercise simple. Diet simple. Stress low. The result is nothing short of miraculous. The simplicity is allowing me tons of time to focus on things I've been wanting to get done. Simple things, but important things.

Today I woke up early, took care of Kay's breakfast (daiya cheese grits and GF toast), worked out and have cleaned most all day. Washed my hair...waiting to straighten it now so that I can go out tonite** :) and going to balance bills in a bit.

It's so interesting what we can get done when we STOP focusing on bullshit taking our attention away from where it should be and START just doing all those things we know we should be.

Only a few days til 2013, but nothing is stopping you from getting started NOW. Let's go!

Days 19-25: 31 Days til 2013

Crazy busy doesn't even begin to describe how things have been around here. I have been making time for my workouts though! It's TOM (Merry Christmas to me rite?) but Santa was very good to Kennedy and brought her a limited edition Star Wars xbox and Kinect. We have been dancing all morning. Can we say cardio? :) I can totally see myself doing this when she is not here with a Jane Fonda workout suit on AND leg warmers...yes I have like 4 pair. lol.

I gave myself an early Christmas present and went to the gym with a good friend yesterday and did a killer lower body workout. My glutes are sore so that is a good thing. It is the old gym I used to go to. I was moderately nostalgic while there, but not so much that I want to rejoin. lol.

Today I am having simple meatloaf and steamed veggies and butternut squash soup that I made my last CSA delivery of the season. At some point when Kennedy goes with her father for a while I am going to do an upper body workout and possibly go to the movies.  Django Unchained. Not sure if it will keep me in a cheery holiday kinda mood.

My workout today although I am bloated like a cow will include
  • shoulder presses
  • tricep kickbacks
  • bicep curls
  • dips
  • pushups
I want to keep it simple, but to get it done! What are you doing to bring a Merry Fitness to yourself? You deserve a green smoothie (had one already) and red apple and move your body today!

This last week before the new year will find me cleaning and clearing...getting ready for my new job (yea more money!!!!) and in deep meditation and reflection. I have such a good feeling about 2013. Seriously. I hope that you do too. If not, time to break out the journal, or notepad on your smart fone and get to planning, daydreaming, wishing and hoping. Because THAT is how dreams come true :) Trust me I know ;)

Days 15, 16, 17 and 18: 31 Days til 2013

This week I am back on track with my exercise. I am not over doing it because I am so so so busy this week, but yesterday morning I woke up at 5:40 am to get my upper body circuit done. Today I woke up at the same time but I have application stuff to do so I can't take care of my workout until after work....which you all know I hate to do. Evening workouts are just NOT my thing, but I will keep the momentum going and get it done.

Kennedy is back in town from New Orleans, but terrible weather on the East Coast got her home at like 10 pm so no school today for her again :( Maybe I can sneak my workout in before I go and get her from her dad's this afternoon shhhhhhhh

I have been keeping my diet choices very simple lately. I am only 18 days into this 31 day healthy jump start and I feel better than I have in a long long time. Maybe because I am so focused or something I don't know. But if you are contemplating waiting until the holidays are over to get started on a healthy plan, I beg you to throw that "tomorrow" thinking right out of the window and get on the "NOW TRAIN".  There is always another valid reason or excuse not to get started, but I can assure you that if you just COMMIT your body and stomach will thank you long before January 1st rolls around.
(Kay in her 1st 5K)

I used to suffer from "perfect-itus". Everything had to be perfectly in order before I even attempted to do anything or get anything done. I have learned while growing older that not only does "perfect" not exist...the world doesn't wait for you. Time keeps passing. So with that said, I am so grateful for these 31 days that are leading up to the New Year. I will be so much farther along. Join me.

Typical Daily Set up:
  • Water first thing
  • Green smoothie: Typically spinach, almond milk, banana (2), frozen pineapple, or an apple/pear, flaxseeds, hempseeds, chia seeds blend add walnuts. (it's Winter. I'm cold. Loving the fat from the nuts)
  • Snack: Juice of some sort or a piece of fruit
  • Lunch: (biggest meal of my day right now) COOKED. Today will be lentils, quinoa, steamed broccoli, and a small salad with balsamic vinaigrette
  • Snack: fruit or juice
  • Dinner: Green smoothie like breakfast, but add dried figs
Exercise Plan for this Week:
  • Monday- Upper body circuit (with cardio thrown in). 35 mins
  • Tuesday- Lower body circuit (with cardio thrown in). 30 mins
  • Wednesday- 1 hour cardio and abs
  • Thursday- Upper body circuit (with cardio thrown in)
  • Friday- Lower body circuit (with cardio thrown in)
  • Saturday- 1 hour cardio plus abs
  • Sunday- Yoga and rest
The last two weeks of this year will be crazy. I have lots of gifts to make. I'll make a separate post about that (the homemade gift giver) and I want to set myself up for success. If I say that I will do hours of exercise per day or juice every morning that is simply setting myself up for failure. My plan for the next two weeks will look JUST LIKE what is presented above. Feel free to join me and email me and let me know how you are doing on your quest to be the BEST YOU EVER.

I am off to check a few emails (so if I haven't responded I will very soon) and get ready for the day.

Days 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14: 31 Days til 2013

Okay life has been crazy busy and Kennedy went home to New Orleans with her father and WITHOUT me. It is a big Christmas and I could not afford a $400 ticket right now :-(

I have been 100% right on with my diet but this week I have barely exercised. No real sleep at night but I got in about 2 solid workouts. With Kennedy gone I can exercise everyone of the 4 days that she is away!

I am on my lunch break and have a meeting after a work but. I am going to get it done tonight! Speaking of at home workouts. My garage is a freezing dungeon! So I am putting a space heater right near my treadmill for about 15 mins on full blast! I will tell you how it goes.

Haven't forgotten to do the pix of her race but if I keep waiting for time to make the "perfect post", it will never get done.

Today I had\am having:
*Green smoothie: spinach. Frozen pineapple. Almond milk. Figs (dried). Chia seeds. Hemp seeds. Bananas. Walnuts
*Lunch: meatloaf. Steamed brocolii. Butternut squash soup
*Snack: large honeycrisp apple (second fav)
*Dinner: Green smoothie: probably same as breakfast

Break is over. I'm HOPING that next week. Is a better fitness week than this one!

Days 7, 8, and 9: 31 Days til 2013

Oh my...the end of a crazy crazy week. Seriously. Crazy.

I haven't uploaded the pics yet, but Kay ran her first 5K yesterday. It was so amazing for me as a mom to be a part of it with her. I cried like a baby when it was over. She walked most of it, but it was at a speed walker's pace. It was also cold, rainy, and a very very hilly course. Now that that is over, I can start to slow down and breathe again. Hopefully this week's blogging can be more in depth.

My days have been pretty much the same food wise, but I finally feel back on track 100%. Lots of green smoothies, juice, and my supplements help with that well rounded feeling.

This week my exercise sorely lacked, but I was on my clean eating 100% and that felt great. Today Kay is with her dad for a bit so I made it to the gym (first time in months). There is nothing like pouring sweat...just nothing. It just clears my mind and helps me to get ready for the week.

Today I ate:
*Smoothie: spinach, pineapple, chia seeds, almond milk, spinach, banana and grapes. Walnuts
*Papapya salad (from Thai restaurant). quinoa and curried chickpeas
*Dinner will be green juice and a huge green smoothie with walnuts

I am hoping after my night of 11 hours of sleep I will be able to wake up on time tomorrow at 5:15 am so that I can workout before work. Here's hoping!

I'm off to finish cooking. It's been a few hours of making meatloaf, white beans, quinoa, sushi, drying oregano, and making butternut squash soup. This is to make my week go by much easier. I promise to have some pictures uploaded on here for tomorrow's post.

Off to finish cooking, and a run a few rainy errands before Kennedy comes home!

Day 6: 31 Days til 2013

Okay I am exhausted. I thought that today would bring me some peace...wishing it were Friday. But so grateful that it is Friday tomorrow. This has been the longest week EVER. And so cold it is bitter outside.

I am finished with all my applications except I have a few tiny odds and ends to check on. A huge weight has been lifted. Tremendously. It feels so good. Today was Kay's dad's bday so we celebrated with him and I ran around getting his things so I am still tired, but have no fear I will be getting rest tomorrow night for sure and all of this weekend if I can help it.

I have also been being more productive now that I have been eating better and getting myself in order. So I have been using my very short lunch time to get a few things done rather than leaving them until the weekend.

I ran out of bananas and it was such a disaster. Note to self: DO NOT make a kale smoothie without bananas. I went out in 25 degrees tonite and bought 12 lbs. That should get me through the weekend and week. Sad part is they are NOT ripe. Ugh..but I can assure you I will be throwing one in a smoothie tomorrow. I have some in the oven (typical of me) and some in a brown paper bag in the closet.

I am proud that during stressful days this week, I kept it all together. :) Go me!

Today I ate:

*31 days smoothie (no prunes)
*Lunch: Homemade veggie soup. Grapes. Quinoa and chickpeas with curry
*Snack: 2 pears and grapes
*Dinner: Smoothie: kale, grapes, almond milk, hempseeds....walnuts. It was hard to get this down.

GOOD NEWS!!! Even though I was exhausted I did turbo for 55 minutes! Go Jayna'! I am aiming to wake up at the crack of dawn and do a workout, but I am not sure if I will be able to get up. My soul is tired these days.

Have a wonderful day and I am going to watch Scandal and get to bed!

Days 4 and 5: 31 Days til 2013

Sorry that I couldn't post yesterday. My computer is dead and my mom got me a new one for Christmas!!! Thanks so much mom!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love it love it. Up til midnight setting it up, etc. Still not done, but wanted to post this morning before going to work.

Yesterday no exercise. No challenge. Rough rough day at work and didn't get home until 8:30/9:00. I can't wait to get the rest of this application stuff done so that I can move on with my life.  This morning however,  I am going to attempt to do the challenge for the past two days and then do today's challenge tonight. I know I know....

Yesterday I ate:

*Breakfast: 31 Days Smoothie
*Lunch: Meatloaf. White beans and quinoa. Spinach salad and balsamic vingeratte. Grapes
*Dinner: 31 Days Smoothie

I ate a bit more, but can't remember right now. Sigh.

I have to run, but wanted to say if anyone is joining this challenge or just finding out about it....we have lots of days left until the New Year. Don't feel you need to wait until then to make lasting change!!!!

Day 3: 31 Days til 2013

No workout today and for good reason. I was soooo tired an cold at 5 when the alarm went off. Not normal "don't wanna get up tired" but "I am so tired I could cry" tired. I slept on and off until 6:40 and got up for the day.

Work was insane today and I now have a few new apps to do (surprise) and tonight I completed a HUGE app and it is 11 and I am just getting to bed. I was tempted to complete my swing/pushup challenge but it was all ego. My body is telling me to rest. To read to sleep.

Radical self-care...self-acceptance says do your very best. And today I worked hard all day, ran to Costco for my daughter's running group, had a meeting with her therapist, AND completed a major application! The challenge can wait and DOUBLE on tomorrow. Gasp. :)

Today I ate:

*Pint of green juice
*31 Day Smoothie
*Lunch: Spinach salad with balsamic vinegarette. Meatloaf. White beans and quinoa
*snack: Green juice and a pear
*Dinner: 31 Day Smoothie with 2 prunes and 1 cup of grapes that I ate when I was supposed to be bagging them up

Tomorrow I will definitely be making time for exercise even if it is at nighttime. Yawn.

See ya tomorrow.

Day 1: The Last 31 Days of 2012

My home computer committed suicide. She is dead. After 5 years with our family Suzie has gone on to another plane. Too bad she took my hard drive with her. :(. I have to get someone to pull it ($$$$$). About 80% is backed up but not itunes. Sigh

Anyway, I am going ovaries to the wall not "balls to the wall" lol for the last days of 2012.

Today I did 60 minutes of Turbo and ate my Last Days of 2012 Breakfast Smoothie
*1/4 c oats
*1 c almond milk
*1.5 bananas
*3 prunes
*spinach
*1 tbsp chai seeds
*1/4 c walnuts

Put the walnuts in after it is blended and only blend on pulse for about 3 seconds. That way you can chew the chunky bits!

Lunch: same smoothie
Snack: Fresh OJ and grapefruit juice
Dinner: Meatloaf. Roasted rosemary potatoes. Organic salsa and Mary's Gone Crackers chips. Today was the last of those. I ate the rest before they went stale. I don't want to consume anything overly processed during these 31 days. But I don't have money to waste so I ate em.

My workout plans include 100% at home workouts. No time for the gym at all :( but I have always said I rather workout here at home. And as Kay gets older, it gets easier in here with her.

I only have one app hanging over my head and some checking in with other applications to do so wish me luck please.

I set up a projected hopeful weight loss and fitness schedule for the next 31 days. I know it will be challenging to get up at 5 am in the pitch black and freezing cold house, but I have what it takes to make it happen.

Do you?????? Let's do it.

Up at 5 am

How many of you ate early risers? I have always prided myself on being a "night owl". It is how I got through college and grad school. But as I get older I recognize the wisdom my late aunt Jo had. She woke up every morning between 4 and 5 am.

And I work to cultivate healthier habits I realize that rising early helps me to accomplish it all and gives me a sense of completion. Also it is sacred to "greet the day". As the day dawns I get a surge of hope. I stop wherever I am in the house and do ONE sun salutation. It is powerful.

Today I hopped on the treddy in the frozen garage (can we say 23 degrees outside) and jogged/walked for 30 minutes. Then did 2 rounds of strength training. Time for me to pack lunch for work and get Kennedy going!

I hope you are all making plans to end this year with a bang!

Be Thankful

There is so much I desire in my life right now. And SO MUCH I am grateful for.

My daughter's life is top on the list. Not a day goes by that I don't think about how far she has come.

My breath. My life. The ability to do better today than yesterday. The number one thing I am grateful for today is HOPE. So many have lost theirs...

I am full of hope. I hope you are too :)

Have a wonderful day full of thanks and giving.

Not sure what is up with me and technology not getting along but another really long post was deleted just now :(. So I am going to leave you with these pix only until later. Sorry.

I Can Tell I am getting Better When...

Off again from work. Tomorrow I am going in for sure, but this morning I had a slight fever still and felt like crap. I did notice an improvement in myself though!

Yesterday I did a healing meditation and took a gang of vitamins. If anyone is wondering NO I do not take OTCs. (Over the counter meds). Kennedy doesn't either except for migraines and surgeries obviously!

I can tell I am feeling better when I start planning. As a self-professed Type A personality, I love lists...plans...color-coded memos and this afternoon I made plans to finish my apps and get back on track with fitness.

Honestly, the thought of doing a pushup right now makes me shiver, but hopefully by Monday I can ease back into it.

Here is a pic of some great hearty veggie soup that I made two months ago. I defrosted it and can enjoy it now that I am not feeling well. I haven't forgotten to show you the chai recipe* I just haven't been in the kitchen much AT ALL lately. :(

Send me some well vibes so that I can be back to myself in no time!

Off From Work...The Sickies

I am home today from work...*cough, cough*... I started feeling badly a few days ago. Yesterday I went to work and had a terrible day. Sneezing, coughing, fever...ugh.

I made up my mind last night that I wasn't going into work and then I got a fever and I KNEW I had to call off. I don't want to make the kiddos sick. So... did I stay home and rest? ummmm.....NO!

I worked on: my paper for publication, essays, and am about to organize my stuff. I feel so terrible, so I keep taking breaks throughout the day to lean against the wall and take some short breaths. I have to get Kennedy and her friends off the bus and wait for their parent to get home. I will just sit in the car and let the girls talk outside in the cold until he comes home.

I intend on taking another steamy hot bath and drinking 4 or 5 more cups of tea and going to bed early. I may call off tomorrow if the fever doesn't break.

I take the GRE next week. I can't wait to get back on track with fitness and cooking after this cold/virus passes and apps go in!!!!

Sunday Studying and Chai Goodness

Okay. I love chai tea lattes. almond milk vanilla chai lattes to be exact! I will tell you exactly what I do to make them in my next post! I was spending anywhere from $15-30 a week (yep) on chai when I go to the bookstore/coffee shop to study.

I am a coffee shop lover. I worked in one for years during college and would sit by the fireplace with a steamy hot soy vanilla latte and my camera...taking photos of the colorful people that came in and out.

Breakfast oatmeal cinnamon apples chia seeds. Almond vanilla chai latte

Kay posing before school after picking her clothes out.

Bookstore chai and a halloween craft.

I am off to finish studying and help Kay socially navigate her playdate. Not sure what is for lunch, but something quick! I will also walk on the treadmill before bed for about 30 minutes. Phew. Long Sunday ahead.

Cold Saturday Mornings and Busy Food Ideas

Early cold Saturday mornings can find me washing clothes...and meditating. Nothing like the stillness of a new cold morning to help me reflect on my priorities and on life.

Shocker but today will be a crazy busy day. I will make time for 50 swings and 20 pushups and maybe a slow stroll on the treadmill.

Heading across town about 36 minutes to Wegman's for quick foods to eat for the next few weeks as I finish up all my apps. I will do a post tomorrow with what I buy. I'm thinking of

*burrito ingredients (beans...GF wraps...avocado)
*oatmeal with all the fixins (raisins...flax...chai..fruit)
*Clif bars (fancy way for sayng GF candy bar)
*green smoothie ingredients (thinking of pumpkin smoothies...applie pie smoothies, etc)
*and more!

So, if you are reading this and have things to get done...GET TO IT!

Lunch Time Work

I can't even take three minutes for leisure at lunch because all my time is devoted to working on my apps. Sigh.

I woke up late (6:38) so no swings or juice. I do have 3 pints of green smoothie, a gluten free almond butter and jelly sandwich and grapes!

If you are devoted to something right now let's commit to finishing the year strong! I refuse to give up. I refuse!

Tinight I will be cleaning up and getting ready for the weekend of writing WITH Kennedy at home. I intend on getting up early for a walk on the treadmill....just to keep myself moving.

Progress not perfection

Quick Tunnel Thoughts and Quick Vegan Foods

This morning I woke up feeling kinda groggy. This "cold-ish" thing I'm trying to fight off is a pain in my ass. Ugh. Nevertheless, I woke up with a plan and pressed on. Kennedy is still at her dad's so work MUST BE DONE.

I cleaned the house a bit (dishes...ugh) and finished the laundry. Though a huge pile of it is sitting in front of the tv waiting to be folded. I packed my bags and headed out for errands and to the library. Don't know about you...but I am a HUGE fan of lists. I can't function much without one. I was able to check most everything off :) :)

I had a short and quick approach to exercise and food today:

  • 50 swings, 20 Pushups....no squats today ( :( )
  • 3 green smoothies (made em when I woke up)
  • Gluten free burritos
  • Few yoga stretches on my mat...candles lit
  • Meditation at my altar....about 7.5 minutes (glorious)
Perfection isn't the goal here. I have a bad habit of letting my self-care fall in the toilet when life stresses me out. And NO MORE!

If you wanna know what reads are keeping me motivated check them out below!

Get in ONE lane: Tunnel Vision and Tips for being Healthy When Busy

I am turning the blinders on to get my applications done. I will be partaking in my fair share of soy chai vanilla lattes, quick green smoothies, burritos, and easy soups in order to carry me through the next three weeks. I can feel myself getting overwhelmed so instead of falling back on back habits, I am making sure to keep up with my self-care rituals.
This morning I woke up to piles of dirty laundry, a kitchen in desperate need of a cleaning, and a terrible nose bleed (me and central heating do NOT get along). I made sure to take care of the bloody nose (talk about priorities :) ) and made a huge steamy mug of tea and sat at my altar. I journalled quickly to release all the crazy busy thoughts swimming around my brain and then I did my morning meditation. Feeling refreshed I decided that the best use of my day would be to get dressed and head STRAIGHT to the bookstore to begin my work. If I stayed home I would have gotten caught up in doing a few loads of laundry, dish washing and vacuuming  I know this about my past behavior.

Saying all that to say, sometimes in life when we have a great deal of things to accomplish...multi-tasking is the opposite of what we need to do. I have found through severe trial and error that focusing on ONE THING at a time is far more effective than trying to do and complete three things at once. Just put your mind on that ONE thing. Now the Type-A mom in me is going a bit crazy because I am behind on baking, cleaning, organizing things for the Fall holidays, but....exhale... there will be time for that...there always is. Next year this time I wont' remember that my house wasn't spotless clean the first few weeks of November, but I will remember accomplishing all that I seek to accomplish in the next few weeks.

Therefore, there must be a drastic change in my exercise and diet routine. I can't dedicate 5 hours per Sunday to cooking and food prep. Things will need to be EASY for the next few weeks. Here are my ideas for making that the case...
  • In the A.M. Making 2 pints of juice for the day (more if I use the grapefruit AND ingredients for green juice. This is a guaranteed way of getting goodness in my system when I wanna run in and grab GF animal cookies like I did late last nite...shhhh
  • Making 3 pints of green smoothie in the morning and throwing some chia seeds in for bulk. This is a great idea when I want something filling. I grab the smoothie and also some fruit (grapes/banana/apple).
  • Burritos. Meaning...rice (premade), beans (premade), lettuce, cheese maybe, and dressing (see below)
  • Oatmeal (already in small containers mixed with hempseeds, chia seeds, cinnamon, and almond milk). Grab a container and start eating
  • Huge bowl of chopped romaine to throw beans/chickpeas and dressing on top of. Which leads to my last point
  • Make a container of tahini/lemon/garlic/nutritional yeast/tamari dressing
Didn't workout this morning, but will get in my minimum (50 swings, 20 pushups, 20 squats) before bed. I'm off to finish working and keep focus. What do you need to do that isn't getting done? Are you focusing on fitness and weight loss and ignoring other important and pressing areas in your life or close relationships? Could you benefit from going into the tunnel for a while to get an assignment done? If so, I suggest you hop to it. NO one will give you permission to do so... you just gotta make it happen. :)

Bag of Juice and 4th day of 21 day Simple Cleanse

When I say "bag of juice" what I mean is in order to make the mornings go a bit more smoothly, I bag up all the ingredients that I will use in my juice in eco ziploc bags and have it in the fridge ready to juice. This won't make that much, but on my Simple Cleanse, I am having green juice every morning so I can't afford to drink a gallon per morning. lol :)

Tonite I did a killer workout. I was literally dying...hopefully my simple cleanse helps me to reclean my diet and helps to restart my fat loss mission!

    • ALL x3x15
  • goblet squats
  • burpees
  • one arm row
  • curtsy lunges
  • super planks

I pack my bag for work everyday with my breakfast (which I eat on my first break), my lunch and my snacks. It is a fool proof plan for eating yummy goodness all day long. It's the only plan I have because I wouldn't be caught dead eating that shit they have in the lounge. Gag me.

If I am going to overeat or eat something "wrong" it will be gluten free and vegan. Some of that stuff should be illegal to sell. I'm serious.

If you have to be gone from home all day come up with a plan about how you can prep and cook food on the weekend (or a weekday) and bag up and bring snacks with you. I will try to get some pix up to show you how I get ready for the week.

Off to do about 5 minutes of yoga, journal and read a book! If you don't have a bedtime ritual, I highly suggest you get one :)

A Hurricane 8 minute Workout and a Crazy Sexy Outing

Hurricane Sandy FRIED my desktop. Now I know Myrtle (yes I named the computer as I do all household aplliances) was 6 years old which is like 300 in technology world, but you all know my deep aversion to buying useless new items simply because commercials tell me that I need to upgrade. NOW I am freaking because I am trying tips from youtube about how to revive my computer.

Well, my ceiling buckled :( and in came Hurricane Sandy's rain...oy. THAT will be fun to deal with tomorrow. However, I am safe and so is Kennedy so all is well here. Thanks for the great emails. I wish I had taken more photos, but I did make 6 pints of green juice, 6 pints of green smoothie and had a stash of larabars going in! PLUS all the food I cooked on Sunday. I am doing great now that it has passed.

I did my Hurricane Sandy 8 Minute BC I-have-to-hurry-up-and-take-care-of-business Workout

  • 50 KB swings
  • 10 Swings, 10 Pushups, 10 Squat Jumps x 5
  • BAM I'm done!
Speaking of Crazy Sexy... yesterday I talked about Kris Carr's new cookbook. Well, even though I preordered on online, I went out in the post Sandy weather to my nearest bookstore to buy a copy! I am entering in to win Dinner with Kris. By preordering it I gained access to her Cooking Classes online and now I will have one to share with friends!

At first glance it is gorgeous (as all her books are), but the recipes are intense. Lots of spices and things I don't keep on hand which sucks, but then this can be a great resource for me when I do "entertainment" cooking or want to show off. Lots of calls for nuts (cashews, pinenuts) and things like wine, sherry, etc...that I NEVER really use. She more than makes up for it with her and Chad's Mashed Potato with garlic herb buttah recipe and Miso Salad Dressing.

I will need more time to devote to some of these recipes, but at Christmas time I can see me making one or 10 of these! She is just a shiny rockstar and I'll find a way to buy anything she touches--even if it means having two copies :)

I just washed my hair and am under the dryer for a second while Kennedy makes a "secret Halloween potion". We are cuddling and watching a movie and I am turning in early tonite unless I can't resist the draw of Parenthood :) I am wishing everyone a safe and warm nite. Please take a moment for a 2 minute meditation and be so grateful for your home/car/child/love in your life etc.

Hugs,
Jayna'

Tea Ritual and Hurricane Sandy Prep

Hi there! I'm sipping hot ginger tea and preparing for Hurricane Sandy to make her way to PA. I am having Hurricane Katrina flashbacks right now and trying to remain as calm as possible. Drinking tea always helps to calm me down. There is an inherent calmness to drinking a pipping hot drink. I close my eyes and savor...

Kennedy will be going to her dad's because he has a fireplace and they are expecting the power to be out for 7-10 days. I know this about storms...especially hurricanes...never underestimate them. So I will miss her big time, but will be happy that she is safe and warm. Roasting vegan marshmallows on her dad's fire.

Yesterday I cooked a ton of food. I wanted to photograph it, but was trying to hurry up. Quickly here is what I made:

  • Indian chickpea kale dish
  • Roasted rosemary potatoes
  • Meatloaf
  • Steamed some fresh broccoli
  • Made a bag of juice (more on that later)
  • Spicy butternut squash chickpea soup (will give the recipe)

This morning I got up and had:

  • water with lime
  • green tea
  • oatmeal with chia seeds
  • ginger tea
  • and will have something yummy later
  • workout complete
  • yoga (before bed)
I also did a really quick workout before going outside on my deck to bring in all my flower pots that were flying around in the wind. 60 mph gusts! I almost blew over...seriously.

I loved this workout and will probably do it all week long (MWF) and throw in 5K training on T/R/S because Kennedy is running a 5K and I really need to train for this dreaded thing :)

In case I don't have power wish me well because I'll be here alone, but know that I will blog as soon as I can! maybe I can even get in a few candlelight workouts!

Wish me luck :) <3 font="font">

Sunday Cooking and Beginning of My Simple Cleanse

I was up really late watching scary movies on lifetime.  Stalked at 17 was a mess! And the other one...um....Fugitive at 17 .
Therefore I slept in late. Until 7:30. I felt like I was on vacation! I had some water and lime (they are less expensive than lemons :) And a quart of grapefruit juice that I made last nite (kinda weird tasting) and am about to have a bowl of oatmeal with flax and chia seeds. Yum. Today's workout is only going to be 100 KB swings (spread out througout the day) and yoga...the mat is all laid out.

I've talked ad naseum about one of my idols wonderwoman Kris Carr. I wrote more about her in this post right here. She came into my life a long time ago when she was first coming onto the health scene. I just received a call from a very dear friend telling me how grateful she was that I introduced Kris into her life years ago. We both cried during that phone convo :)

Well, she has done it again. She has a cookbook coming out on Tuesday Oct. 30. I preordered it over a month ago and am so excited that this week it is coming out. Now my funds are majorly limited, but when it comes to anything she makes I know it will enhance the quality of my life 10 fold...investment indeed.

Here's the awesome thing...if you preorder the book, you can get access to a video series that she and Chef Chad (major cutie) made together. The video series gives a video about juice/ beans/ sauteing/ knife skills, shopping in the produce department. I love them.

I'm writing this because if you are waiting to find ideas and reasons or motivation and practical ways to get started, her books are the real deal. While the first few were written for the canSer thrivers, they are all beneficial to everyone.

I am embarking on the 21 Day Cleanse from her book Crazy Sexy Diet. I will just incorporate any recipes from her new book Crazy Sexy Kitchen as I go along. I have got my job schedule down now so I have determined how to get my juices/smoothies/foods in on my breaks. Also, I will continue getting up early and start to rise 30 mins earlier (5:30 am) starting tomorrow to fit my 20-30 min workouts in before getting Kennedy up for school.

Cleanse Day 1

  • Affirmation: I am capable, confident, intelligent, resilient and in charge. Health and happiness are my birthrights and I accept with gratitude
  • Water with lime, green tea, grapefruit juice, oatmeal (with extras), red beans and rice with sauteed kale, green smoothie (spinach, banana, almond milk, frozen pineapple)
  • Exericse: 100 Swings and yoga

I'm off to cook up this butternut squash and get Kennedy some lunch. I hope that you have a productive Sunday and get ready for the week!

Oatmeal and Green Smoothies

It is such a busy time of year for me. Maybe everyone else has a simple da-to-day life, but let me tell you...stuff around here is bananas! Now that I am working full-time I feel like everything has been turned upside down. I just need to get in the flow of things and I will be much better off.

Why is the title "Oatmeal and Green Smoothies", because these two things will take me through the next few weeks while I get organized. I don't really buy oatmeal packs, but I found a really cool one that is hella convenient for me to take and stash at work and keep in the glovebox for emergencies! And I am making about 2-4 quarts of green smoothie per day using almond milk, spinach, and frozen pineapples mostly. Simple, quick, and I make em and take em! Along with other fruit (mostly from Costco), I am trying to get it together.

My trusty mason jars are all I need to get organized with this. I just screw my lids down tightly and I am ready to roll. I don't  listen to lots of talk about blend then immediately drink. I do what I have to do to make things work in MY life.

So...for the next 4 weeks, I will continue getting up early (although  the end of daylight savings time will kill this dream in a week or so) and get my short 20-30 mins treadmill (training for a 5K that I'm running with my daughter), or KBs, or Ashtanga yoga practice. Make my lunch and be out the door. Phew!

Today I got up at 5:20 am to organize stuff. As soon as Kay was up we went ran all the errands. Everything was put away an settled by 10:15 am!!! Now I have to finish the laundry I started last night and get my workout in and STUDY STUDY and WRITE WRITE.

Make sure that if you are feeling overwhelmed that you take a step back get your meditation going and do the "next best thing" you can do to get yourself on track.

Sometimes you Just Have to Do ONE Thing

It has been so crazy here. Good news is is that I started a new job working for the same school district my daughter attends (hello same holidays OFF. Summers OFF) :) Bad news is I am trying to create a balance with my time, i.e. meal prep, exercise, sleep, applications etc.

I am having a bit of a struggle, but feel like I can pull it together. I'll give you an example of the kinds of workouts I've been doing. Short and simple and effective.

Last Nite's 8:30 pm workout:

  • 30secs/30secs
    • Jumprope
    • Pushups
    • Jumprope
    • Goblet Squats
    • Jumprope
    • Alternating one arm row
    • Jumprope
    • Plank
I have to run, but if you are busy right now like I am let's find ways to get and stay on track! Just do THE NEXT BEST THING and think of ONE thing you could be doing to make the GREATEST improvement and start TODAY. Even if it's only "more water", "more rest", or you do 10 pushups and 10 squats. Just do it and get that momentum going!

I believe in you

This Moved My Heart Today

This spoke right into my soul today. Check the writer out here: Brooklyn to Mars.

I didn't get much sleep last night and I have to go out of town tomorrow. It will be the first day that I won't bring Kennedy to school OR pick her up. Exhale....change right? After only sleeping 3 hours, I ran to the store and came back home to eat and take a 3 hour nap. Then I took the hottest bubble bath known to man.

Up next I will be meditating...yes I've been finding my way back to my altar to reinstate my daily meditation practice. I'm off to get prepared for tomorrow. Below find a few pix from my AC/NYC trip this weekend. The rain precluded me from taking more :(

Yesterday and today for my workouts I kept it super simple.

Workout:

  • 10 Pushups (military)
  • 10 KB swings
  • Repeat until I get to 100 of each
  • Sometimes I take breaks in between
Those on their way up will someday fall.  Those steady will one day age and expire.  The things that terrify you will one day be forgotten.  You might as well remember that the horrible things in your life will be gone as soon as you are; face them and fight them.  The only other option is to hide in corners shaking terrified never knowing for sure if you have what it takes.  Move now and experience the intense moment of triumph; when breath comes easy and you find relief on the far side of mental hindrances.
