Pains of Technology- Kay's 1st day of 3rd Grade

Hey! No internet for like a week! OMG...it was good in a way, but I was NOT a happy camper. Well, Kennedy started 3rd grade. Yes 3rd grade. I am so proud of her. Of course I cried like a baby. I woke up made a healthy breakfast and we were out of the door! Now that she is back at school, I can be a schedule. I will start applying for full-time employment in about a month so that leave little time to significantly raise lest I die retake the GRE for a better quant score and do some application stuff. Ugh..life huh? lol

High stress didn't produce the best detox ever, but I feel a bit better. I was so sluggish and even got a pimple. I NEVER get them. Detox can be the pits.

This week I am making time to walk and trying my best to swing my bell when I first wake up for about a hundred swings. Until life returns to some sort of normalcy, this is what I'll keep doing.

Here are some pix from yesterday!

I will be back later with a proper update!

Letting Go of What We Don't Need

I don't have a great deal of time so this post is short and sweet and an update on my detox. I've always seen detox as "taking in less toxins today than you did yesterday". In that sense I am on track...but my juice/smoothie/salad plan went down the drain.  Here's why....

I am financially strapped right now. Like seriously. And it's time to start school for Kay in a week PLUS I just bought a new 2012 vehicle and I had to put some money down because believe it or not my VW beetle wasn't a great trade-in ...go figure. Well, it was 14 years old and full of daisies and bumper stickers, but geeezzzz. I went to the store to stock up on juice supplies, etc when it hit me, "Omgodess I simply can't afford this". Like Seriously. People who are strapped for cash will understand this. If you don't understand it...lucky you.
My hippie philosophies serve me well, but sometimes it boils down to I simply can't do it. My bill was about $125 and $100 of it was Kennedy's snacks and her food. I decided that a simple, clean, 100% whole food diet for the next 30 days (no vegan ice creams, snacks, etc)..30 days only to cleanse my system in a more subtle way would be fine.
So, here I am. I am also aiming to eat a bit less. I previously was consuming bigger quantities and working out like mad, but now I"m going to cool it on the heavy workouts and focus on keeping things really simple. I have an appt on Thursday to quit the gym so it will be my garage treadmill, spinning bike, kettlebells and dumbells.
I'm making an effort to blog (even if shortly) everyday until Oct. 1st. Someone sent me the sweetest message and though she asked that I not make it public, suffice it to say that it moved me so much. So those blogs will be done with her in mind ;-). Today I woke up walked a slow 30 minutes on the treadmill just to get the lymph system pumping had a nice breakfast and it's off to clean before taking Kennedy and her friend to the swimming pool.
Breakfast:
1/2 GF oatmeal
1 c frozen mixed berries
1 tbsp flaxseeds
1 c organic fairtrade coffee with ricemilk

Now I am off to organize and clean. I'll fill you in on my I'm having for lunch and dinner later or on tomorrow's blog! Don't waste this weekend. Get started.

5 Days of Cleansing/Detoxing/Lightening the Load

Okay stress has taken over. OMGoddess...I started to feel all overwhelmed lately. I mean really fucking overwhelmed. As a stress eater...stresser...worry-wart...my workouts started slipping and my self-care routine went bye bye and the snacks started.

Now, I have mentioned before that I am not a big self-punisher when it comes to food. Any food. I am a gluten free vegan 100% and anything shy of that I don't beat myself up. Well, in times of stress I need to reign it all in. I may try to do ONE great thing per day like: make sure I had a shit ton of water...or I took my vitamins or had a green smoothie or juice, but not ALL the things that keep my (as Kris Carr would say) God Pod moving along like I know I should.

Why is it that in times of severe stress or whatever do I let the very things that hold me together slip? Ugh that is something I've been working on for a while.

Anyway, I have been purging things in my life: people, situations, material things. Guys that I kinda maybe sorta thought I may like- gone. Situations where I wasn't feel my best or most empowered- gone. My storage was full of bins- color coded, cute bins that would make any Type A person look and say "she is so organized". But I knew the truth. There were papers in there that I'd had since 2004 when Kennedy was born. Books that I was holding onto (although I have two 5 shelf HUMUNGO bookshelves in my room) etc. So when Kay went with her dad I took 12 hours listened to Alanis Morrisette (the early years) and got to work! I cleaned the ENTIRE STORAGE.

Since I have taken everything ou of my kitchen and 100% re arranged it. Done the same with my closet with the exception of a shelf or two. I'm feeling this strange draw to reduce reduce reduce my life and lifestyle. It is actually annoying me to look around and see so much stuff. So, I've been feeling lighter in my heart, but not my body. Hence the 5 day cleanse!
From today until August 20th I will be consuming smoothies, juices, salads period. I pick up my CSA box today and will let you know what's in it. Undoubtedly I will  need to make a trip to the store tomorrow, but I am keeping it simple. I will also just do some KB swings today to get myself back into my workout groove.

Anyone else overwhelmed? Not doing what you need to to take care of yourself? How about starting TODAY with one thing to get you back on track? That's what I have done and I feel better already. :)

You HAVE TO eat RAW FOOD

I am not sure that I am getting my point across effectively on the blog when it comes to my views on raw vs cooked food so let me be very clear

without a doubt, raw organic water rich foods are the best foods to consume on the planet. point blank. period. without equivocation.

Onward...my inclusion of cooked food into my diet was one of a clear and distinct choice. It wasn't like one day a vegan sandwich was calling my name. I had been 100% raw for a few years and felt like I was spinning my wheels...financially and that I was over-consuming nuts/oils to feel full during the freezing cold East Coast winters...it stopped feeling like the right thing to do 100%. However, the tenets of raw food, the exemption of overly processed crappy vegan foods became paramount.

Perhaps I could have found a way to stay full and warm during the winter months without eating cooked foods, but why? I never saw raw as a RAW-ligion and subscribed to its philosophies because they did (and still do) resonate with my soul and help me to vibrate on a different wavelength. In my mind a bowl of organic gluten free oats and berries with flaxseeds was far superior to a bowl of soaked/sprouted oat groats combined with a zillion ingredients to make them palatable. Or dinner of 1 steamed sweet potato and steamed veggies and rice made more sense than a huge salty plate of dehydrated burgers and breads just for the sake of staying raw.

In my honest opinion nothing is wrong with either of those choices. But when your food choices start to consume you...trouble you...or you feel like it is all in your head it is time to step back and realize there is a real world of problems going on and your battle between rice vs romaine really ain't that big a fucking deal. I am not trying to be insensitive AT ALL. I struggled with food for a long time during college.

If your goal is to be 100% then do it. Get armed with books, superfoods (or not), and some cash and get your kitchen raw ready!!! That is awesome. I believe that a 90-100% raw diet while living in a tropical climate is the BEST LIFE EVER. I truly feel that way. If you are like me...living life...stressed for time and strapped for cash...then a whole foods super high raw diet could be the way to go... for time, finances, and peace of mind.

Workouts and Meals When Crunched for Time

Majority of the emails I receive (and always feel free to email me...I'm always listening) are about:

  1. How to get STARTED
  2. How to eat/train when your life is BUSY
So, today I want to address those two things. And in that order. Even if you are already on your path, maybe this advice can be passed on to someone else you know who is struggling with getting started.

I have to say that getting started is the HARDEST part of this healthy living process.  People ask the questions: how to start? where to start? There is so much info out there about diets and eating it blows your mind! And now that we have blogs you have zillions of people's personal experience to sift through.

Well, let me say this: GET STARTED ON A PROGRAM THAT RESONATES WITH YOUR SOUL. If you don't have a problem eating dairy (I do) then design a program that allows for grass-fed meats, and organic dairy. We look at other people and think that THEY have the answer to what is best for US. It doesn't work like that. Just look around at healthy living guidelines (drink 3L of water per day, eat tons of veggies, get rest ) etc and make your own HEALTHY LIVING BLUEPRINT.

Example of Jayna's Healthy Living Blueprint:

  • Rise Early (7 days a week. No later than 8 am like EVERish)
  • Drink 16-32 oz water FIRST THING (about 90% of the time)
  • Training done early. I prefer first thing, but normally will do it around 9 ish (soon to change)
  • I eat whole foods 90% of the time (sometimes GF cereal, GF wraps, organic tortilla chips, etc)
  • I eat raw foods everyday. I don't chart it, count it, or makes % of raw. I just eat it.
  • I don't eat after 8pm....80% of the time.
  • I write down what I eat, but don't count calories M-F on Sat and Sun I don't write it down and I eat very "loosely"
  • I can't/won't make myself crazy with this. Lifestyle implies something I will be doing for the rest of my life. I make changes as I see fit. My goal is to feel really fucking good everyday therefore now I:
    • Eat superfoods
      • Maca, spirilina, reishi on the way
    • Don't take forever to workout (quitting my gym...post tomorrow)
    • Take hot bubble baths- 4 per week...long soaks while reading a great novel
    • Only doing things I want to do...not feeling obligated to do shit I don't want to
    • Erasing guilt...in all forms....
That was just an example, but you get the gist of it. You can fill it in however you wish. But, just know that YOU have to live with it. YOU have to wake up everyday excited to do it all and excited to see changes.

Quick Meal Ideas:

Breakfast: On Sunday put 1/2 c organic oats in several small containers in the fridge. I add 1 tbsp flaxseed (ground) and some fresh berries. On the day of, I just add almond milk/water and cook. Or I add water the night before and eat it cold without cooking in the morning after my workout.

Smoothies- Hella quick...

Lunch/Dinner: GF wrap with tons of veggies/beans/daiya cheese/avocado etc inside. BAM.

GF veggie sandwiches.

Prep on Sunday and then just grab our already made beans, quinoa/brown rice/ cut up veggies and make a bowl of goodness. I put romaine in, cold beans, cold quinoa, curry, salt...BAM. Add a small salad

Quick Training Ideas:

Fuck driving to the gym. Gyms are bullshit. (Sorry I am just not feeling them lately) They do have their place and time...sorry for the harshness. But if you are crunched for time, don't spend any driving and getting your locker...go downstairs in your garage or like I do in front of my bed and have your own gym.

Grab a jumprope, stability ball, and a set of heavy dumbbells and repeat this circuit:

  • Jumprope 1 minute
  • 10 Military push ups
  • 10 Heavy squats
  • 20 Jump lunges
  • 20 Full crunches on Stability ball
    • Repeat 5 times

There honestly isn't any reason not to eat well or not to train. Even if you only have beans and rice in your house. Or bananas and spinach. WHAT YOU DO HAVE IS A CHOICE. And so many people feel like they don't. You choose what you shove down your pie hole so choose whole foods...cooked or not. and if all you have is 10 minutes, jump rope in place (rope or not) an do that circuit above.

Want some motivation? Email me. I'll help you in any way that I can.

Happy Birthday Mr. President

Happy Birthday President Barack Obama...

His election...his vision helps me to believe in better tomorrows for American citizens. I know that my Bohemian, hippie life views are quite far from the majority....but I still hold out hope that one day in this nation all people can be free...all people can feel love and all people will be equal.

Barack believes this as well...

Rock on Pres
