Bag of Juice and 4th day of 21 day Simple Cleanse

When I say "bag of juice" what I mean is in order to make the mornings go a bit more smoothly, I bag up all the ingredients that I will use in my juice in eco ziploc bags and have it in the fridge ready to juice. This won't make that much, but on my Simple Cleanse, I am having green juice every morning so I can't afford to drink a gallon per morning. lol :)

Tonite I did a killer workout. I was literally dying...hopefully my simple cleanse helps me to reclean my diet and helps to restart my fat loss mission!

I pack my bag for work everyday with my breakfast (which I eat on my first break), my lunch and my snacks. It is a fool proof plan for eating yummy goodness all day long. It's the only plan I have because I wouldn't be caught dead eating that shit they have in the lounge. Gag me. 

If I am going to overeat or eat something "wrong" it will be gluten free and vegan. Some of that stuff should be illegal to sell. I'm serious.

If you have to be gone from home all day come up with a plan about how you can prep and cook food on the weekend (or a weekday) and bag up and bring snacks with you. I will try to get some pix up to show you how I get ready for the week.

Off to do about 5 minutes of yoga, journal and read a book! If you don't have a bedtime ritual, I highly suggest you get one :)

A Hurricane 8 minute Workout and a Crazy Sexy Outing

Hurricane Sandy FRIED my desktop. Now I know Myrtle (yes I named the computer as I do all household aplliances) was 6 years old which is like 300 in technology world, but you all know my deep aversion to buying useless new items simply because commercials tell me that I need to upgrade. NOW I am freaking because I am trying tips from youtube about how to revive my computer.

Well, my ceiling buckled :( and in came Hurricane Sandy's rain...oy. THAT will be fun to deal with tomorrow. However, I am safe and so is Kennedy so all is well here. Thanks for the great emails. I wish I had taken more photos, but I did make 6 pints of green juice, 6 pints of green smoothie and had a stash of larabars going in! PLUS all the food I cooked on Sunday. I am doing great now that it has passed.

Speaking of Crazy Sexy... yesterday I talked about Kris Carr's new cookbook. Well, even though I preordered on online, I went out in the post Sandy weather to my nearest bookstore to buy a copy! I am entering in to win Dinner with Kris. By preordering it I gained access to her Cooking Classes online and now I will have one to share with friends! 

At first glance it is gorgeous (as all her books are), but the recipes are intense. Lots of spices and things I don't keep on hand which sucks, but then this can be a great resource for me when I do "entertainment" cooking or want to show off. Lots of calls for nuts (cashews, pinenuts) and things like wine, sherry, etc...that I NEVER really use. She more than makes up for it with her and Chad's Mashed Potato with garlic herb buttah recipe and Miso Salad Dressing.

I will need more time to devote to some of these recipes, but at Christmas time I can see me making one or 10 of these! She is just a shiny rockstar and I'll find a way to buy anything she touches--even if it means having two copies :)

I just washed my hair and am under the dryer for a second while Kennedy makes a "secret Halloween potion". We are cuddling and watching a movie and I am turning in early tonite unless I can't resist the draw of Parenthood :) I am wishing everyone a safe and warm nite. Please take a moment for a 2 minute meditation and be so grateful for your home/car/child/love in your life etc.

Tea Ritual and Hurricane Sandy Prep

Hi there! I'm sipping hot ginger tea and preparing for Hurricane Sandy to make her way to PA. I am having Hurricane Katrina flashbacks right now and trying to remain as calm as possible. Drinking tea always helps to calm me down. There is an inherent calmness to drinking a pipping hot drink. I close my eyes and savor...

Kennedy will be going to her dad's because he has a fireplace and they are expecting the power to be out for 7-10 days. I know this about storms...especially hurricanes...never underestimate them. So I will miss her big time, but will be happy that she is safe and warm. Roasting vegan marshmallows on her dad's fire. 

Yesterday I cooked a ton of food. I wanted to photograph it, but was trying to hurry up. Quickly here is what I made:

  • Indian chickpea kale dish
  • Roasted rosemary potatoes
  • Meatloaf
  • Steamed some fresh broccoli
  • Made a bag of juice (more on that later)
  • Spicy butternut squash chickpea soup (will give the recipe)


This morning I got up and had:

  • water with lime
  • green tea
  • oatmeal with chia seeds
  • ginger tea
  • and will have something yummy later
  • workout complete
  • yoga (before bed)
I also did a really quick workout before going outside on my deck to bring in all my flower pots that were flying around in the wind. 60 mph gusts! I almost blew over...seriously.

I loved this workout and will probably do it all week long (MWF) and throw in 5K training on T/R/S because Kennedy is running a 5K and I really need to train for this dreaded thing :)

In case I don't have power wish me well because I'll be here alone, but know that I will blog as soon as I can! maybe I can even get in a few candlelight workouts!

Sunday Cooking and Beginning of My Simple Cleanse

I was up really late watching scary movies on lifetime.  Stalked at 17 was a mess! And the other one...um....Fugitive at 17 .
Therefore I slept in late. Until 7:30. I felt like I was on vacation! I had some water and lime (they are less expensive than lemons :) And a quart of grapefruit juice that I made last nite (kinda weird tasting) and am about to have a bowl of oatmeal with flax and chia seeds. Yum. Today's workout is only going to be 100 KB swings (spread out througout the day) and yoga...the mat is all laid out. 

I've talked ad naseum about one of my idols wonderwoman Kris Carr. I wrote more about her in this post right here.She came into my life a long time ago when she was first coming onto the health scene. I just received a call from a very dear friend telling me how grateful she was that I introduced Kris into her life years ago. We both cried during that phone convo :)

Well, she has done it again. She has a cookbook coming out on Tuesday Oct. 30. I preordered it over a month ago and am so excited that this week it is coming out. Now my funds are majorly limited, but when it comes to anything she makes I know it will enhance the quality of my life 10 fold...investment indeed.


Here's the awesome thing...if you preorder the book, you can get access to a video series that she and Chef Chad (major cutie) made together. The video series gives a video about juice/ beans/ sauteing/ knife skills, shopping in the produce department. I love them.

I'm writing this because if you are waiting to find ideas and reasons or motivation and practical ways to get started, her books are the real deal. While the first few were written for the canSer thrivers, they are all beneficial to everyone.


 I am embarking on the 21 Day Cleanse from her book Crazy Sexy Diet. I will just incorporate any recipes from her new book Crazy Sexy Kitchen as I go along. I have got my job schedule down now so I have determined how to get my juices/smoothies/foods in on my breaks. Also, I will continue getting up early and start to rise 30 mins earlier (5:30 am) starting tomorrow to fit my 20-30 min workouts in before getting Kennedy up for school.

Cleanse Day 1

  • Affirmation: I am capable, confident, intelligent, resilient and in charge. Health and happiness are my birthrights and I accept with gratitude
  • Water with lime, green tea, grapefruit juice, oatmeal (with extras), red beans and rice with sauteed kale, green smoothie (spinach, banana, almond milk, frozen pineapple)
  • Exericse: 100 Swings and yoga

Oatmeal and Green Smoothies

It is such a busy time of year for me. Maybe everyone else has a simple da-to-day life, but let me tell you...stuff around here is bananas! Now that I am working full-time I feel like everything has been turned upside down. I just need to get in the flow of things and I will be much better off.                                         

Why is the title "Oatmeal and Green Smoothies", because these two things will take me through the next few weeks while I get organized. I don't really buy oatmeal packs, but I found a really cool one that is hella convenient for me to take and stash at work and keep in the glovebox for emergencies! And I am making about 2-4 quarts of green smoothie per day using almond milk, spinach, and frozen pineapples mostly. Simple, quick, and I make em and take em! Along with other fruit (mostly from Costco), I am trying to get it together.

My trusty mason jars are all I need to get organized with this. I just screw my lids down tightly and I am ready to roll. I don't  listen to lots of talk about blend then immediately drink. I do what I have to do to make things work in MY life.

So...for the next 4 weeks, I will continue getting up early (although  the end of daylight savings time will kill this dream in a week or so) and get my short 20-30 mins treadmill (training for a 5K that I'm running with my daughter), or KBs, or Ashtanga yoga practice. Make my lunch and be out the door. Phew!

Today I got up at 5:20 am to organize stuff. As soon as Kay was up we went ran all the errands. Everything was put away an settled by 10:15 am!!! Now I have to finish the laundry I started last night and get my workout in and STUDY STUDY and WRITE WRITE.

Make sure that if you are feeling overwhelmed that you take a step back get your meditation going and do the "next best thing" you can do to get yourself on track.

Sometimes you Just Have to Do ONE Thing

It has been so crazy here. Good news is is that I started a new job working for the same school district my daughter attends (hello same holidays OFF. Summers OFF) :) Bad news is I am trying to create a balance with my time, i.e. meal prep, exercise, sleep, applications etc.

I am having a bit of a struggle, but feel like I can pull it together. I'll give you an example of the kinds of workouts I've been doing. Short and simple and effective.

Last Nite's 8:30 pm workout:

  • 30secs/30secs
    • Jumprope
    • Pushups
    • Jumprope
    • Goblet Squats
    • Jumprope
    • Alternating one arm row
    • Jumprope
    • Plank
I have to run, but if you are busy right now like I am let's find ways to get and stay on track! Just do THE NEXT BEST THING and think of ONE thing you could be doing to make the GREATEST improvement and start TODAY. Even if it's only "more water", "more rest", or you do 10 pushups and 10 squats. Just do it and get that momentum going!

This Moved My Heart Today

I didn't get much sleep last night and I have to go out of town tomorrow. It will be the first day that I won't bring Kennedy to school OR pick her up. Exhale....change right? After only sleeping 3 hours, I ran to the store and came back home to eat and take a 3 hour nap. Then I took the hottest bubble bath known to man.

Up next I will be meditating...yes I've been finding my way back to my altar to reinstate my daily meditation practice. I'm off to get prepared for tomorrow. Below find a few pix from my AC/NYC trip this weekend. The rain precluded me from taking more :(

Yesterday and today for my workouts I kept it super simple. 

Workout:



















  • 10 Pushups (military)
  • 10 KB swings
  • Repeat until I get to 100 of each
  • Sometimes I take breaks in between
Those on their way up will someday fall.  Those steady will one day age and expire.  The things that terrify you will one day be forgotten.  You might as well remember that the horrible things in your life will be gone as soon as you are; face them and fight them.  The only other option is to hide in corners shaking terrified never knowing for sure if you have what it takes.  Move now and experience the intense moment of triumph; when breath comes easy and you find relief on the far side of mental hindrances.

I only have a minute. My home computer crashed and burned (in the middle of work) and I can ill afford another. I've been applying and interviewing for work like crazy and feel I have barely had a second to breathe. I've been riddled with self-doubt and some fear (immobilizing) thoughts lately. I've wanted to bring something positive to the blog and haven't really been able to do. As with all things we want to avoid one day turns into two...a week...a month...more.

I was inspired by something I read today so I will re-post it here. Hopefully if you are in a similar rut it will inspire you too.

I've been eating well and exercising with the exception of a fun day in NYC and a stressful day of snacking on GF Vegan processed junk, so that is working itself out. I've been sticking to 30-45 minutes of at home fitness: circuit training, some KBs, intervals, etc. Just keeping the exercise and my diet really simple.

#2. Stop waiting for perfect conditions to launch a great project. Immediate action fuels a positive feedback loop that drives even more action.
#3. Remember that big, brave goals release energy. So set them clearly and then revisit them every morning for 5 minutes.
#4. Mess creates stress (I learned this from tennis icon Andre Agassi who said he wouldn’t let anyone touch his tennis bag because if it got disorganized, he’d get distracted). So clean out the clutter in your office to get more done.
#5. Sell your TV. You’re just watching other people get successful versus doing the things that will get you to your dreams.
#6. Say goodbye to the energy vampires in your life (the negative souls who steal your enthusiasm).
#7. Run routines. When I studied the creative lives of massively productive people like Stephen King, John Grisham and Thomas Edison, I discovered they follow strict daily routines. (i.e., when they would get up, when they would start work, when they would exercise and when they would relax). Peak productivity’s not about luck. It’s about devotion.
#8. Get up at 5 am. Win the battle of the bed. Put mind over mattress. This habit alone will strengthen your willpower so it serves you more dutifully in the key areas of your life.
#9. Don’t do so many meetings. (I’ve trained the employees of our FORTUNE 500 clients on exactly how to do this – including having the few meetings they now do standing up – and it’s created breakthrough results for them).
#10. Don’t say yes to every request. Most of us have a deep need to be liked. That translates into us saying yes to everything – which is the end of your elite productivity.
#11. Outsource everything you can’t be BIW (Best in the World) at. Focus only on activities within what I call “Your Picasso Zone”.
#12. Stop multi-tasking. New research confirms that all the distractions invading our lives are rewiring the way our brains work (and drop our IQ by 5 points!). Be one of the rare-air few who develops the mental and physical discipline to have a mono-maniacal focus on one thing for many hours. (It’s all about practice).
#13. Get fit like Madonna. Getting to your absolute best physical condition will create explosive energy, renew your focus and multiply your creativity.
#14. Workout 2X a day. #18. Use your commute time. If you’re commuting 30 minutes each way every day – get this: at the end of a year, you’ve spent 6 weeks of 8 hour days in your car. I encourage you to use that time to listen to fantastic books on audio + excellent podcasts and valuable learning programs. Remember, the fastest way to double your income is to triple your rate of learning.
#19. Be a contrarian. Why buy your groceries at the time the store is busiest? Why go to movies on the most popular nights? Why hit the gym when the gym’s completely full? Do things at off-peak hours and you’ll save so many of them.
#20. Get things right the first time. Most people are wildly distracted these days. And so they make mistakes. To unleash your productivity, become one of the special performers who have the mindset of doing what it takes to get it flawless first. This saves you days of having to fix problems.
#21. Get lost. Don’t be so available to everyone. I often spend hours at a time in the cafeteria of a university close to our headquarters. I turn off my devices and think, create, plan and write. Zero interruptions. Pure focus. Massive results.
